well i had the exact same problem, i don't know the issue is detected was causing it or something else but anyways i have figured out a way to fix it without loosing any data at all.

The issue i detected was a spammy message, its a long long message.

First download a mac/windows whatsapp client from their website.

Go to iPhone setting > Whatsapp, turnoff all the other settings except cellular.

Then connect you iPhone to mac/windows via lightning cable.

At this point your Whatsapp should be working fine on desktop client( If it is then go further or else reinstall )

Look for spammy message

Delete that message and you have got your whatsapp back safe and sound. 🙂

I found a quick fix that worked for me, bit tricky though. Close down whatsapp by following 3rd step by D.Cohen.

  • Go to Settings>Whatsapp>switch off everything other than mobile data and notofications.
  • Come back to home screen and open whatsapp. It should now respond...hopefully (responded for me)
  • Now go to Settings>Whatsapp>and switch on everything
  • Open whatsapp again...and it should work now.

....and folks, the issue i faced again is that i can open just one chat window, continue chatting or calling...and when i try to go back to open another chat window, the app freeze again....! If that happens, just do the above steps again. I know its painful..but this can be a temporary solution until apple or whatsapp fix this.

thank you so much you information helped me for the time being at least i can open it now but i am confused that where is the problem with my phone? with my ios? or with whatsapp application? and how can we save ourselves from future problems like this our data is on so much risk and vulnerability as we have over 5 gb of only whatsapp and apple doesnt offer more than 5 gb free and as we can not create backup this is not good sign. i was this close to delete my whatsapp and then re install and then shift to android because i've seen so many issues in this period of iphone 6s since i bought on in October 15 than past 5 years when i had iphone 4 , 4s , 5 those phones never lapsed as well but this one lags sometimes its irritating that iphone had one competitive edge over android which was it never slow or lag and now its on the same track then why should we pay more?? apple shoud really look forward to this. altough they are not much concerned about their customers :@ highly dissatisfied with apple (although i've been very loyal customer since 2010)

Revoke Application's Permissions and Authorize them again:

This method includes, going into settings , WhatsApp, and then revoking all the app permissions.

Here's How:

Go to Settings, scroll down, then select Whatsapp.

Now, you should see most or all of the permissions are authorized already. What you have to do now is to deselect each and every permission .

Once you have revoked all the permissions, close the app first and launch it again.

And in the end it should work..

Once you are done with Revoking the permissions, and Whatsapp is running fine too, it’s time to go back into settings again, and re-enable/authorize all the permissions again.

This worked for me !!

This is happening to me as well since yesterday evening.

This is not specific to ios 9.3.2. I have a 5s and am on 9.2.1 and have never updated to the latest one till now.

When the issue started yesterday evening, Whatsapp version was 2.16.4. Even after updating the app to 2.16.5 yesterday night, the app was giving a white screen for some time and returning to the homescreen. So I had to uninstall the app and reinstall it. I was working fine then until today morning.

Today again in the morning, this issue has been re-occurring. However this time I was able to navigate the 2 groups(though at a snail's pace) on which I had recd recent messages and clear the chats. Since then it has been working fine now. Now I am seeing this forum that others are experiencing this too, so thought would post my experience(if it helps).

Users in other threads are also reporting this issue even with earlier versions of IOS like 8, etc. So this is not a ios version specific issue.

This is not the first time in the last few months WhatsApp has had a substantial issue following an iOS update (or an update of its own). It is not up to Apple to fix this.

WhatsApp was updated yesterday, presumably to fix this. However, in the past is has for some user required deleting and reinstalling the app to take care of the issue. There are some additional suggestions in this thread you might investigate as well (not sure everyone posting is having the same precise issue).

If you visit the app page and click "View in iTunes" when on your computer, you will see that other users of this particular app have started reporting the same issue on the latest version of WhatsApp update. This is an issue of the app version as it is specific to that app alone and will be dealt with by the app developer, not Apple.

If an app you installed unexpectedly quits, stops responding, or won’t open - Apple Support

If you aren't having these issues with native apps on your iPhone as well, the issue is specific to the 3rd party app installed on your iPhone. App Developers are solely responsible for the compatibility of their apps with Apple's software, not the other way around. "Thanks"

How to back up your devices using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support

You can use the previously existing, free alternative, known as iTunes. The developers of WhatsApp could also alleviate this issue of storage for you by keeping your saved conversation threads on a server of their own much like Facebook Messenger does. This way you could simply login to your account and there they would be. Apple is not in the popular business of selling your information to advertisers, so it makes its profits from goods and services that it offers to its customers through payment. If you see a desire or a need to require more than what is included in the freemium 5 GB, you can choose to purchase 50 GB of storage in iCloud for 99¢/month US. Otherwise, continue backing up through iTunes.
