External speakers not listed in sound output list

Weirdly, for some reason I insisted on trying to connect the speaker again through bluetooth (after having used it connected through a P2 stereo cable) and it worked great! Don't remember if I had a system update inbetween, but I probably have.

I had the same problem with SONY:SRS-X3 and Macbook Pro El Capitan(10.11.6), and finally come to restore by pushing "reset button" on SONY:SRS-X3 and re-paring them.

Same speaker here, same problem. It happens once a month or so. I had to do a hard reset on the speaker, then restart my MBA (pairing to the speaker kept failing before I restarted the computer).

Just had this happen as well with the SONY:SRS-X3 speaker.

Hitting the reset button on the speaker solved the issue.

I have the same problem with my JBL Xtreme. A reset did not help at all.

Is this issue resolved? I have the same problem with my Mac pro running yosemite. After pairing with my boAt rockerz bluetooth headphone, it is not getting listed in sound output devices. I am able to see it in bluetooth device list in menu bar.

I had/have the same issue with a pair of JAM bluetooth speakers. They turn on, they pair, they connect just fine -- but they wouldn't show up in Sound Output. JAM even replaced them for me. Re-setting them didn't work. I was using El Capitan ... and they worked great for a while, then stopped. I just updated to Mac OS Sierra... and sure enough, they show up in Sound Output now... however... if you play any audio, it still only goes through the internal speakers. I can click the external bluetooth speakers in sound settings -- and it won't "stick" -- it reverts back to Internal speakers in about 1/2 to one second. So I'm looking for some thoughts from everyone as well. Thank you.

Thank you!!! I have a pair of Sony bluetooth headphones that were giving me the same trouble. After reading your post, I saw that they have a reset button on them. Reset, then re-paired, and now they are listed in output devices and work again!

I'm having the same problem... SONY:SRS-X3 speakers with Macbook Air on OS X El Capitan (10.11.6). The speaker and macbook will both say that they're connected, but the speakers won't show up as an Audio Output device when I open System Preferences. Reset button on the speaker and then reconnecting worked for me.

Hi! I had the same problem on my Retina 12" MacBook running MacOS Sierra 10.12.1.

All I did to fix the issue was to unpair my harman kardon bluetooth speaker and pair them afresh.....they are working again now and appear on my output devices when I connect to them.

Using OSX 10.12.2 imac 2011. My JBL xtreme doesn't show up in sound output preferences, but DOES in bluetooth - say it's connected. Always been a ***** to synch, random synch, now nothing...

The reset worked for me too on a pair of SRS-X5 speakers.
