No install disk for windows, but I do have the ISO file. How do I get around this problem?
iMac with Retina 5K display, el Capitan
Hi,
Yes I have an iMac 5K but it did not have a fusion drive. I had a single Apple SSD and installed a separate Samsung SSD where the HDD fusion slot. I did this solely so I could install windows on a separate drive rather than partitioning...
I was not aware that I would encounter these problems?
What is the problem with the iMac and having 2 separate internal drives?
Can I resolve this by "fusing" the 2 SSD's and then partitioning them? Seem's a bit ridiculous seeing as they are both SSD's though?
Thanks Loner T.
Since you have two SSDs, you can create a Fusion drive. Your error message indicates a different problem. If you erase the highlighted SSD, and continue, does BC Assistant prompt for the location of the Windows ISO? Is this is iMac a 2014 model or 2015 model?
Hi,
This is a late 2015 model. I have had a number of problems with Bootcamp.
1. When creating a windows USB it does ask for an ISO but the process does get underway. The error was something like could not copy files...
2. I was unable to download the drivers and create a USB. Bootcamp would freeze once download completed (repeatedly on different internet connections). Unfortunately after speaking with apple this is the only was I can get the newest drivers for Windows 10. The other "publicly facing drivers only support up to windows 8.1)
3. When creating the bootcamp on the second drive I received a number of errors. Errors reformatting drive, and errors copying ISO files.
4. I have managed to install windows manually, however as per point 1 this is pointless if I cannot get the latest drivers to run windows 10 from bootcamp assistant.
5. I am not sure if OS X is broken, seems to be some communication problem with OS X. I also had errors generating log files with apple on the problem. I have decided to erase all discs an re-install OS X to see if Bootcamp will run.
Do you think this is a system problem, a specific problem with bootcamp, or is putting in the second ssd playing havok with the iMacs understanding of the world?
Cheers,
1. 2015 Models do not use a USB Installer. They use an internal partition called OSXRESERVED. Please see https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/assistant/6.0/#/bcmp173b3bf2 for reference.
2. BC 6.x will download BC drivers every time you want to install Windows. It is a rather unfortunate design and a flaw, both. I sit possible to use a wired connection?
3. You can create a Fusion drive, and allocate Windows enough disk space to cover the entire disk, which will use the second disk. If you run into any issues, a diskutil cs resizeStack can be used to carve out space on the second disk.
4. The latest drivers can be manually downloaded to a USB flash drive using the following.
5. OSX (and specifically) BCA cannot deal with non-standard disk configurations. These are derived from the Mac Model Identifier. For example, your disk configuration is supported on a pre-2013 Mac Pro.
Thanks Loner T!
Most helpful, I was able to download the drivers under the action menu! It was not working when I was going through BCA prompts....
Your right. After clean install BCA will still not copy files. BCA prompts me for a Windows installer disc but I am still getting this error..
My plan was to download a program which will allow disk utility to partition the secondary drive into NTFS. Then install windows from windows install disc. Then I can at least install the most recent drivers I have downloaded through BCA and everything should work?
I didn't want to create a fusion drive and then partition the drive as it just seem clunky, with a lot of drive fusing and splitting?
Are there any advantages to creating a fusion drive rather than keeping them separate and following my procedure above?
Thanks, much appreciated.
Also does it need to be NTFS or is FAT fine?
Would there be an advantage to one over another?
Thanks
From OS X Terminal, can you post the output of
diskutil list
diskutil cs list
If DU fails to erase/format the second disk, it can be manually erased. What is the version of Windows you want to install? You 2015 Mac only supports W8.1/W10 in EFI Mode. W7 and older versions are no longer supported under Bootcamp. To install W7 and older versions Virtualization engines may be an option worth considering.
