SYNC 3/Apple Carplay not working.

Recently bought a 2016 Ford F-150 XLT Sport and it has the new SYNC 3 infotainment system. When I plug my iphone 6s in, I do not get a Carplay pop-up or anything. Just says at the top of the screen that a device is connected. I have tried plugging in while connected via bluetooth but with no success as well. Also, when I try to update apps while connected, the screen stays stuck on Updating Apps.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am interested in using some of the apple carplay apps features with the sync 3 system.

Also, my iPhone is running iOS 9.3.2

Thanks, Jon

I don't think it is really deceptive as it isn't like Ford can sell you anything and make money from it. If they come out with the software/hardware update they can sell it then. We also aren't at late 2016. I think someone already mentioned that document and statement as that is what his dealership showed him.

Don't eat your feet, wait until Thursday and stuff yourself with stuffing and Turkey instead. And have a great Thanksgiving and give thanks that you were wise enough to do further research.

24 February 2017

I just came back from the Ford dealer with my 2016 Ford F150. Im a bit ticked because I had a 2009 F150 that I wanted the car play for and was told by Ford Online and the Ford salesman that the update would be available in the fall of 2016, (and it would be a free upgrade) otherwise I would of waited for a 2017 with it installed.

As you know the update didn't happen in 2016 and we are still waiting.

On the 22nd of February I went into the dealership for a oil change and asked about the update. One of the service people called the tech guy and said it was available. I was told I'd have to buy a module for about 80 dollars Canadian. And then do a software update, which was out. My surprize!

They tried to do it, it didn't work, the service agent is going to look into it, but as of this date, the sync update to CarPlay is not out or working yet, but you will need to buy a module and have it installed when the update does come out....

In this day and age this is bad for a big company like Ford with huge resources to get a software update done.

I too just bought a 2016 Ford F150 XLT with Synch 3. The salesmen told me it had "apple car play". Come to find out it does not so needless to say I'm upset. Both the salesmen and I set out to find the available truth.

All 2017 Synch 3 cars will have Apply Car Play. There was a 2017 Explorer on the lot with it. I saw it in action.

However, I found out that Apply Car Play for 2016 Synch 3 owners will need both a HARDWARE and software update. The hardware update will cost money. No one seems to know when or how much. The best answer I received was "later this year".

I'm determined to be the first at my dealer to buy it and install it.

No just that its the same hardware. The only difference is the version 2 vs version 3. less capable systems run it just fine. Also going off what sync chat says... but hey, they aren't the brightest and they called it android car play twice. So Who knows anymore.

When I went through chat again to get the text, the next person said android auto wasnt supported yet but would was available with an update without having to visit a dealer (ok android auto already works), and that carplay would require a module. Thier site doesn't say this at all. they say 2016 models support carplay with the model and the number now, but in really sync needs to be sync 3 version 3.8, I suspect everyone here has Sync 3 version 2.

Either way ford needs to get their crap together. both the dealer and some of the chat people said it should work since its the same hardware then others say it wont because the sync3 2.0 module itself is gimped.

We just had an edge and both were 2016 models, one sync3 worked fine with carplay and the other did not. the dealer said it was the exact same stereo but one had the update and the other didn't and that it was just an update. So if there is some hardware needed then ford needs to get their act straight.

Long story short, no it has nothing to do with fake news or leaking info. Just try dealing with ford for 30 mins and get 5 different answers.

The only person I know with a 2016 Sync 3 was clearly told by the manager of the dealership that it would require the installation of a hardware kit and software upgrade to support CarPlay. That matches what another poster here was told by the dealership. I imagine if you go back to the first line chat people you can probably get 5 different answers, none of which disprove that a hardware add-on/upgrade/whatever is required.

But it doesn't really make any difference at this time, until Ford announces and makes available whatever is necessary nobody with a 2016 model will have it.

So, I just tried to pull a favor I didn't want to pull to try and prove this right, but this will blow up in my face now watch. An old friend I haven't talked to in forever works for ford and she said it is a bit of a cluster-f but it IS a hardware module required. that the stereo is effectively the same, but its the sync module so it's causing confusion with everyone from customers to dealers to support. She said It will be a software update you can get now but wont do anyone any good since you will need an upgraded sync module. She said it might have to do with licensing or memory or what, but wasn't sure, just said that it IS a hardware module required for any existing Sync3 version 2 models. oh well... friggin great. It's not for me it's for my in-laws and they still think it should work since their dealer. I just have to deal with it now...

If you want to bug a dealer she said the capability is package 160(?) and it needs Sync3 version 3.8 and that they are rebranding it to "Sync 3 with carplay support". Not to be read as Sync3 inherently supports carplay, but the package is called that as opposed to sync3. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

update: she sent me more info when i was giving her a hard time about the confusion.

this page (the one used as the answer here) seems to say the 2016 edge supports it with no caveats. (again... "sync3" vs "sync3 plus carplay support" )https://owner.ford.com/how-tos/sync-technology/sync-3/apple-carplay/sync-3-plus- apple-carplay-support.html

So its not very up front about what your getting.

BUT.... she just sent me this page:

https://owner.ford.com/how-tos/sync-technology/all/phone/phones-compatible-with- sync.html#?year=&model=&syncGen=

which shows details when you select the year model and sync3 (2016 edge sync3), the carplay as desired capability, then after selecting your device, it says it works with carplay but not android auto without an update (again android auto works today) regardless... it says as part of the tiny ? overlay when you click we get

"Apple CarPlay is available on 2017 models with SYNC 3; owners of 2016 models with SYNC 3 are required to perform a software upgrade (Available Late 2016) and purchase a hardware upgrade. 160."

clicking learn more on this takes you back to https://owner.ford.com/how-tos/sync-technology/sync-3/apple-carplay/sync-3-plus- apple-carplay-support.htmlwhich we have already established as marketing deception perfection.

TL;DR ... So it's buried and deceptive, but there it is. Local dealer is dumb. I'll eat my feet now. Thanks, Lydia.
