Q: If I upgrade to photos from Iphoto

Im running a late 2012 mac with mavericks and would like to upgrade to a new 27" 5k model. I know that all my photos will have to go into the new Photos app when I migrate from one to the other.

Can someone please tell me whether the photos app will still keep all my events and albums from iphoto. Im assuming that any slideshows wont be imported.

Also...do you just drag and drop pics into Photos like you do in iphoto?

If you do just drag and drop do they automatically appear as a new album and do you have the option of naming that album whatever you want to.

I actually like iphoto and some of the horror stories I hear about Photos is putting me off upgrading.

I also assume that you cant create slideshows in the new app or tranfer photos directly to flickr.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

When you first open Photos on the new machine it will attempt to automatically import the contents of the iPhoto library. I really don't know what it doesn't import.

If you have the recent version of iPhoto then before opening Photos make a duplicate copy of your iPhoto.library file located in the /Home/Pictures/ folder. You can update iPhoto to the last version and continue using it in El Capitan. See the following:

Re: Is Iphoto gone ? i want it back!

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1. If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash. Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall? iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

Events and albums will be retained but they will all be albums.

    Slideshows are imported.

Drag and drop is still supported.

You can name an album whatever you want, I don't understand the rest of that particular question.

You can create slideshows and upload photos to flickr.

Thanks for this but I dont think it solves my problem......I went to purchases and it says iphoto is installed....but im running mavericks on a 2012 mac and therefore the newest version available is 9.5...you cant download 9.6 unless you are running el capitan or yosemite.

If I do what you suggest after having bought a new mac then Ill have the same problem...

This is very helpful  ...if you can still do all that then Im less worried. Just for clarification..........if I drag 30 photos into the new app will all those photos be imported as an album which I can then rename...similar to how iphoto does it?

No, you would need to create the album from the 30 photos once you have dragged them in to import them Into the Photos app.

You may want to take a few precautions, before you migrate your iPhoto Libraries to photos.  get them ship-shape for the migration, and that is best done while you can still run iPhoto.

I collected the things you should consider in a user tip, see: Notes on Migrating an iPhoto Library from iPhoto to Photos for Mac

Notes on Migrating an iPhoto Library from iPhoto to Photos for Mac

Your migration from iPhoto to Photos will be smoother, if you take a few precautions.

Get started with Photos for OS X - Apple Support

also see:   Updating from iPhoto to Photos for OS X - Apple Support

    1. First of all, as always, when upgrading the system, make a full backup, so you can revert to the previous state. Make a Time Machine backup or a bootable clone.
    2. Ensure that your iPhoto Library has no issues before the migration. Repair the permissions, and repair the database. http://ilifehelp.com/tutorials/iPhoto/rebuild/How.to.rebuild.repair.iPhoto.html
    3. If your iPhoto Library is not in your Pictures folder, but on an external drive, check the drive for compatibility. Photos may have problems accessing the drive, if it is on a network volume and not locally mounted. If you are planning to use the library with iCloud Photo Library, the drive must be formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled). Move your iPhoto Library to a correctly formatted locally mounted volume, if necessary. Even if you do not want to use iCloud Photo Library, the migration will only work on a correctly formatted drive.
    4. The new Photos.app does not support geotagging as well as iPhoto (the maps are not detailed enough to position the pins correctly) and the batch changing support is still poor.  If you have photos in your iPhoto Library, that do not yet have GPS locations assigned, add the locations while your library is still in iPhoto.  Also, if you need to batch change titles or captions, do it in iPhoto, while you can. Batch changing in Photos is very limited. Most importantly, Photos does not use the filenames as default titles, only titles in the title field. If you want to see the filenales below the thumbnails in Photos like in iPhoto, batch change the  titles to the filenames, while you are still running iPhoto.
    5. Photos does not have events, but structures the library by Moments and Collections, which are created automatically, based on the locations and capture dates. It is important to check the dates and locations for consistency, before you migrate. Later it might be difficult to correct them.
    6. Albums and events will be transferred as albums, but Photos has no description field for the albums. If you need to save descriptions of your albums or events, copy them to the description field of the photos in the albums.
    7. Since Photos does not have events, smart albums based on events will not be transferred to Photos.
How Photos displays Smart Albums from iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support
    8. See here, what will migrate and what not:
How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support
    9. Your new Photos library will be created in the same folder as your original iPhoto Library. Make sure, you have free storage in that location.  Photos will not duplicate your original image files from the iPhoto Library, but link to these files to save space: Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
Don't delete your old iPhoto Library in a hurry. It does not need much space, and you may need to revert to it, if the migration will not succeed.
    10. Photos will migrate the last iPhoto Library you opened before the migration automatically.  So switch to the iPhoto library you want to migrate, before you open Photos for the first time.
    11. Photos does support referenced files, and better than iPhoto, but photos with referenced originals cannot be used with iCloud Photo Library.
    12. Photos does not support the merging of libraries. If you want to merge several libraries into one, do that before you migrate your libraries, for example with Aperture 3 (Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries), if you have it, or the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager  http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/Help/merging%20libraries.html

12:  Just like iPhoto or Aperture, the Photos Library cannot be stored in a Cloud storage like Drop Box, iCloud Drive, Google Drive (Updating from iPhoto to Photos for OS X - Apple Support).   Syncing will corrupt the Photos Library.

Good luck for your migration to from iPhoto to Photos.

BTW: There is no need to do the migration in a hurry. Both Aperture3.6 and iPhoto 9,6.1 are supported on OS X Yosemite and OS X El Capitan (some minor issues, and you can no  longer order print Products from Aperture and iPhoto). You can continue to use Aperture 3.6 or iPhoto 9.6.1, while you are exploring Photos, so you will know, how to best prepare for the migration.

Thanks very much for this. Some people regard apple developers as geniuses.....others would have a different name for them!

Im still not sure its worth all the hassle...but thanks for all your input.

The software Apple includes for free is totally optional - if you do not like it do not use it - attacking others is not a good thing and there is no call for it - use the free software if you like it - do not use it if you do not

Well you seem to be quite at ease in attacking me for making what was supposed to be a jovial type of remark.

Clearly youve had a sense of humor by pass !

No one attack you - and if you thought your nasty post was a joke then you need a lot of sensitivity training

this simply is NOT a place for RANTS, attacks or other non-technical posts - it is only a place to get technical help from other users

If that is not what you want then this is not the place for you

again if you do not like the software simply do not use it - it is totally optional
