How well does Pokemon Go work on an iPhone 4s?

My daughter wants to play Pokemon Go but doesn't have her own phone yet. I'm considering re-activating my old iphone 4s for her. I see that it is compatible with iOS9 so, so far so good. But what about other issues that might effect performance -- memory, battery life, etc. is anyone using a 4s for PoGo with adequate results?

iPhone 4, iOS 9, 4s

It requires an iPhone 5 or newer.

I can't comment on the game specifically, other than keep an eye on your cellular data. The game is proving to be a data hog according to what I've been reading so watch out if you don't have unlimited cell data.

EDIT: Now seeing that stedman1 points out that it requires an iPhone 5 at minimum, you may not need to worry about it after all.

Hi,

I have been using the iPhone 4S for Pokemon Go. I upgraded to the lastest iOS, I have turned off the AR, background app refreshes, there are some tricks to minimize crashes and most times it seems like gyms crash it.

I'm personally looking into using an iPad to play and using my phone as a data hotspot for better results. That being said I have been hatching eggs, catching Pokemon and hitting up stops. Better to try it than pass all together I would say. Might improve with updates too.

I have a 4S and have been using it, but it's very frustrating. I am unsure of how much of it is to do with the app/server issues and how much from the phone.

In order to use it I have to make sure no other apps are open/running in the back ground, and that the app has no access to the camera, if you attempt to use the camera it's over. And forget using a gym - this always causes it to crash.

Sometimes it has trouble loading, but it can be bypassed by putting the phone onto aeroplane mode, and then turning it off when the warning for no connectivity comes up. It sounds like a pain, and it is, but it doesn't seem to bother my 7 year old too much and he does it himself. If I turn the screen brightness down, the battery lasts around an hour before going flat.

So, is it a desirable device for pokemon go? no. Is it adequate for a child? I would say yes, but I guess it depends on how well they deal with frustration when the app crashes in the middle of catching a much wanted pokemon!

I'm sorry, I don't really understand what you are asking?

With the game on iPhone 4s I can catch pokemon - app will crash ~30% of the time, improved since deleting a lot of apps from the phone. I can collect items at Pokestops, and hatch eggs - the ability to measure distance walked seems unreliable, we walked for 45 minutes yet it claimed we had only walked 1.2km.

I think I probably spend most of the time playing actually rebooting the program!

As the previous poster states, I don't find the data issue too bad. In just over a week I have used ~400mb all up playing everyday, this is including all the other normal data use of my phone. A lot of public places now have wifi so you can jump on that quite easily to save on the data.

PoGo actually can launch and run on iPhone 4S, as I use an iPhone 4S myself. However, it is a nightmare, more than half the time I launch it the first time, it "fails" to connect to the server and often have to retry 3 or 4 times. The other half of the time it'll launch and run.... For a little bit until the game inevitably crashes and I'm back to square one with having to retry to connect again and again.

As for battery life, from 100% to 0%. The phone hardly lasts an hour even though half the time Im not even actually playing the game, but only trying to launch it.

In the end, PoGo still does technically works on 4S as it CAN launch and run, but it's highly inefficient and honestly not worth the experience. It's time for an upgrade.
