I have an original iPP 12.9” at end of 2015, and just got a ASK for first time at end of 2017. I was having issues of the keyboard not working on my lap when I didn’t have a table to work on, but also sometimes not working on flat surfaces. My iPP is always up to date with latest iOS. I tried the hard restarts and cleaning contacts multiple times with no luck. Sometimes changing the angle or reconnecting would work, but just for a little while. I returned the ASK and got a new one, which is now worse. It wouldn’t work at all. Then I read more blog posts...
THE PROBLEM & THE FIX:
One blog post pointed out that we “monkeys“ weren’t connecting it right. This non-monkey was right, but it is certainly not anything us monkey’s were necessarily doing wrong. If you look really close at the connectors area when connecting it, you may notice that it is misaligned with the pins when the magnets snap together. I believe there is a flaw with where the rare earth magnets inside the iPP and ASK are located which may just be a quality of production / tolerance issue in either or both. In my case, i think it is the iPP since it has had the problem with two ASK’s. Now, when I connect my new ASK, i just let it snap on as normal and then fold the cover into typing mode. It never works as-is, but then i just slide the base of iPP around a bit (in my case to the left just a nano-meter) then the on-screen keyboard drops away and typing works on the ASK.
To me, this is a major design flaw and the fix is essentially just a duct tape fix. The problem that still exists is that it drains my iPP battery when i close up shop and use the ASK as a protective cover in my bag. It is advertised to be a protective cover and I could not find anywhere in the fine print that cautions that a pin misalignment will cause the iPP battery to drain. Again, this is because the native magnetic alignment is misaligned, and through the smallest little movements, it finds its way to this native magnetic ‘misaligned’ alignment. Essentially, the misalignment causes the screen to constantly flicker until the iPP battery is drained within a few hours, even when it was at 100%.
I’m taking the ASK back for a refund and will just do without it.
