I‘m typing this on the touch screen with my index fingers so pardon me if you have too read this as slow as I am typing very slowly.

I‘m considering a conspiracy theory right now. Could it be possible that Apple wants us to get use to using the iPad without the attacher keyboard? After all, that has been their modus operandi... for example...

  • The end of life of Final Cut 7.
  • The lack of optical drives.
  • No headphone out of iPhone... to name a few.

I think this is their way of telling us that we need to use the iPad as a tablet and get use to the idea that is is not a laptop.

Could this be a harbenger of things to come?

WHY HAS THERE BEEN NO OFFICAL ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THIS ANNOYING PROBLEM?

I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANOTHER IPad Pro UNLESS THIS PROBLEM IS FIXED ASAP.

I was considering ordering an iPad lab pac of 32 stations for my media classes, but that idea is on hold.

Windows and Android are looking better every day!

So yesterday was a terrible day for the keyboard. It had got to the point by the end of the day where it was just not working. Doing a remove the iPad and reboot was not fixing the lack of keyboard response. Doing the re-seat the gutter was to no avail. I was persistently seeing the on-screen key-board for apps and for the “search” box.

I ended up focusing on the connectors on the iPad, the three in the middle of the side. I cleaned them with a lint free cloth and some eye-glasses cleaner. That attention definitely helped. I have now had almost a day with consistent connectivity between the iPad and the keyboard and with no error messages or the key board not responding.

The problem seems to be with the software / firmware controlling the directional accelerometer As I’m assuming the ipad uses this to work out the orientation and degree of ‘lean’ on the keyboard, along with the magnet stuff to identify that it is in typing position. Next time you get the problem and you have the software keyboard on the screen, pick up your iPad and keyboard (still in the folded typing position) and tilt it backwards. The software keyboard will disappear and normal service resumes.

Count me as another person with the same problem. iPad 10.5” with the smart keyboard. Worked fine with iOS10, but starting with 11 (11.0.1 was the first I tried) it periodically disconnects. The only solution I’ve found is to reboot, which has always worked without disconnecting the keyboard or anything else. Have had the problem on 11.0.1, 11.0.2, and 11.0.3.

I read someone else who said that turning airplane mode on then off fixes it, so will try that next time. But this is a pretty pathetic problem for one of Apple’s supposedly premier products.

Yeah so frustrating this thing with the keyboard, i’ve Been in so many meeting and than suddenly the keyboard doesn’t work, so you end up typing minutes on the scren, which obviously is a lot slower... hm, tried all the reset tricks on here, non is 100% successful, some work in some instances some in others, Apple really need to sort this out, I took my iPad Pro and keyboard to the ’Apple Genisus’, they re-set everything from scratch, like set up as a new iPad,and the first thing the iPad did when rebooting was saying that it didnt recognise this device, and the keyboard didn’t work... hm....

ironically enough is that now, laying in bed on a sleepy Saturday morning, with the iPad on a cushion, the keyboard is working marvellously, and i have managed to type all this text on the keyboard... ;-) which is good, but I doubt it will last, even with the latest updated software...

fingers crossed though

Well since the evening of October 12th, it’s been fine 2 full days and counting. No idea why or how. Normal processing, using full battery and recharging overnight. Partial battery use and charging overnight. Using typical and similar apps as when it halts, no change. Using the type keyboard and using the screen keyboard. Portrait orientation, landscape orientation. Stumped on case. Keeping my fingers crossed that the keyboard will keep functioning.

Well, finally failed, ”accessory not supported”. The iPad and keyboard had been sitting closed for a couple of hours. Picked it up and got a flashing “battery” and flickering main screen, then the accessory not supported. Tried the “type” position on the search bar and the screen keyboard showed up, even with the physical keyboard being “locked and ready”. Sigh 😔

I have the identical problem on an iPad Pro and SmartKeyboard that I recently purchased. I took both back to an Apple Store and got replacements under Apple Care, just in case it was a hardware problem. The issue persists however, and it ranks as my number one frustration with the iPad Pro. I wonder if a software fix is in the works from Apple?

A workaround in the meantime, is to lift the iPad off the docking slot for moment, and then reconnect it. This takes all of 2 seconds to accomplish, but it’s annoying nonetheless.

After lenghty discussions online with the apple support team, they told me that they (finally, halleluja), had started a replacement programme with the ‘faulty’ first generation keyboards, they offered two options, that they send out a replacement keyboard by mail, and that i send back the keyboard by post, (they wanted a credit card deposit for this option), or that i took it in to an apple store and replaced it.
i took it to an apple store (second time), but this time the Genius guy offered to replace it straight away, as there was a problem with the first generation connection pegs on the actual keyboard, that over time they get slightly bent or out of sync or something. Anyhow,
got my new keyboard (last one in the store aparantly... so very lucky), and all goo so far ;-)
