Batch rename and number photos?

Is there a way to both batch-rename and automatically number photos in Photos? The iPhoto program could do both.

I need to be able to specify the starting number.

That can't be done by Photos or any of the user contributed Apple scripts that are currently available in the Photos User Tips section. I imagine that the Batch Change Title to Capture Date-Description-Padded Sequential Number script could be modified to allow to set the starting number. However, that's above my pay grade but léonie might be able to rewrite it as it's her script, if you ask nice enough. 🙂

HOWEVER, if you want to rename the file outside of the library, i.e. export them to a folder with a simple sequential number system you can then rename them any way you want with Name Mangler. It's the most powerful file renaming app I've found.

My workflow was to download each individual photoshoot and rename them before importing into the library.

A little work upfront would eliminate a lot of work later.

This is been my #1 frustration with using a Mac. I need to import photos taken with a variety of cameras. I rename them systematically so that they appear in the order I want. The new file name has the date, a description, then a number so they display in the order I want. I need to be able to specify the starting number. Once the files are renamed, I need to be able to display them in accordance with the naming order. I need to be able to move them and preserve the the file name. I don't understand why this is so difficult for Mac users. The basic Windows photo viewer is set up to do this.

Since Photos is a Database it is not possible to make any changes to file names with =in it - if you want to change the file names yo must do it prior to import or during export as answered

You can during export

If you want to deal with files rather than photos then do not use Photos - it does not allow access to or changes in the files - Use a simple photo views like Preview that does allow direct access to the files
