I went through Apple support and they had me reinstall office, reboot in safe mode, reinstall OS X and then the last suggestion was to do a clean install of OS X. None of this fixed my issue. I went through Microsoft and they gave me much the same suggestions. Nothing is working. Is there any suggestions?
So over the weekend, I formatted my internal drive and started again. From the clean install of OS X I then loaded office 2016. The system ran all weekend with no issues. Today I decided to install the Global Protect VPN software so that I access my work network, and within 15 minutes office apps started crashing. I have since uninstalled Global Protect and the system seems stable again. I suppose this is good news, but what are my options for getting this to work on my system?

Microsoft might be able to help now that you have isolated the cause of the crashes.
I'll see if I can get any feedback on this and report back.
