Security Update 2016-001 10.11.6 - Black Screen with Cursor

Hi,

After having installed the security update 2016-001 10.11.6 and the reboot as part of the installation process I get a white apple logo, the full white line blinks a couple of times and then I get a black screen with white cursor. Cursor moves with mouse but nothing else happens anymore and I don't get the login screen. This happened on my iMac (Retina 5K, late 2014) and on my MacBook Pro (2015).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Tom

That did not work for me.

However, the Segmentation fault is gone from the log file after removing the content of /private/var/folders/.

I also cannot restore from TimeMachine pre-upgrade snapshot since I cannot see anything on the black screen. Flashing the light through apple logo only shows a square inch of the monitor but not enough to complete Command-R sequence of restoring the entire system from Time Machine. The external monitor only works after "blind" login in.

I am hoping to upgrade to Sierra if it is out tomorrow (September 20th). Maybe that will fix the issue.

Any other suggestions?

Incredible! You just saved hours and hours of my life. I had the same problem with 2016-001 update stuck somewhere in-between. And after reading your post I found "Segmentation fault" error in the log file. Removed all files in /private/var/folders in Recovery mode and restarted... voila! Now my Mac is working again 🙂
