Apple just released iOS 10, which promises to be the best version of the platform to date. Unfortunately, some users are complaining that the update is bricking their phones. Even if it isn't technically a full brick, it's the furthest thing from ideal, and no one wants a useless phone. Apple has issued a statement that it has resolved the issue already, but for anyone who was affected, here's a quick-and-dirty guide to getting your phone back to normal:

Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and open iTunes.
At this point, you'll need to force restart your phone and put it in recovery mode. To do that, press and hold the Sleep and Home buttons. Keep holding until you see the recovery mode screen.
You should soon see a prompt in iTunes that asks you whether you want to update or restore. Select Update to continue with the upgrade process.
Repeat steps 1–3 if setup takes longer than 15 minutes.
When the installation is complete, go ahead and set up your phone.
And that should take care of it. If it doesn’t work, well, lucky for you AppleCare is usually pretty god at resolving this kind of thing. Get on the phone or make your way to an Apple Store without delay. If you haven’t updated your phone, maybe hold off for a little while to make sure things have all shaken out. You can use that time to back your phone up to iTunes and / or iCloud — that’s something you should always do before a software update, anyway.

Yeah it is a whole lot of crazy. It's the only difference to the 9 devices I have upgraded tonight.

I have been running the Beta and its been fine with all of the upgrades.

Ok, I've managed to fix the iPhone SE that failed if anyone else is having problems. The process was;

- Turn the device off

- Plug the cable in the Mac / PC

- Hold the home button and plug the cable into the device

It will then be in Recovery Mode.

- Press Update
It will download this in the background and throw lots of errors as it is trying to download. It took around 1 hour to download on my system.
- Update then unpacked the download and went through updating successfully.

NOTE

Because I have never plugged it into my iMac before it wants to restore or set up as a new phone. I have ignored this and just controlled the phone and it went through fine, everything still on the device, without restoring.

Hopefully this helps

CJ.

Here is how I just solved the issue.

1. Update ITUNES to newest version

2. Connect Phone to iTunes via USB

3. Connect computer to internet via Ethernet (critical step)

4. Click Update (not restore). It may take a few tries for it to connect properly to the server since so many people are doing the update. For instance, it literally took me over 10 tries but it finally worked and I was able to keep all my information.

I hope this helps.

Denise with you being on a PC try this;

Go into Control Panel / Device Manager and then scan for hardware changes.

Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes from apple.com/itunes
Restart your PC. Whilst waiting turn your phone off.
When its back on you can then plug the cable into your PC. Hold the Home button on your iPhone (the button at the bottom of your screen) and plug the cable in. iTunes should load and give you an option to upgrade or restore. Select Upgrade and wait patiently for iOS 10.0.1 to download. Press Cancel a few times as it will try and look in the top right corner for it to download. It may take around an hour and a bit with the speed of download and amount of people downloading.
Once it is downloaded it will install the update.
When it finishes do not setup as a new phone or recover from a backup. Control your phone by selecting the home button and following the prompt. This in theory should leave all of your data intact and upgrade your device.

Hope this helps and good luck.

My phone is now blank - it won't turn on at all. If I connect to the pc it beeps as normal but doesn't show the phone. I've tried checking drivers, they are not there (I guess there's no long an os on the phone to transmit the drivers to the pc). I guess it's a trip to the Apple Store tomorrow (luckily I can easily get to two stores) and insist on being seen without an appointment.

I suspect installing the latest iTunes which involved a re-boot of the PC was the final straw for the phone as it failed to connect once that was done.

Luckily I backed up immediately before attempting the os update but this is extremely inconvenient to say the least.

I've just attached my iPod Touch to my PC with the new iTunes installed, but I cannot see the iPod - just as I couldn't see my iPhone. It shows in file manager, the little black box that appears telling me the device is attached showed (that didn't happen with the phone), but how on earth do I view my IPod and what is on it in this new iTunes?

You may have the same problem I just had. It may be something to do with drivers. Try doing this (I found what was needed in Portable Devices by the way, also note you must find the driver manually, link to page which contains the below text, and look on that page underneath the stuff I paste below for details of how to find the driver.

If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support

Disconnect your device from your computer.

Save a screenshot by pressing the device's Home button and Sleep/Wake button at the same time. The screen should flash briefly.

Reconnect your device to your computer.

If you see any of these sections in Device Manager, expand them:

Imaging Devices

Other Devices

Portable Devices

Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Now look for the entry that recognizes the device as a camera. You should see "Apple iPhone," "Apple iPad," or "Apple iPod." Right-click the device entry, then manually update the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.

No real progress re my iPhone, the download failed about 2/3 of the way through and I have started it again. But at least I now have the drivers back on my PC so fingers crossed some time tonight (or in the wee hours) I may be able to put back on my phone the last back up I did. I guess as I'm now doing it on my laptop which does not have the last back up on it, I am stuck with restore rather than update (wasn't offered update at all)
