You are not alone. Hope you find some solace in that.
Yeah, I also have an iPhone 6s and iPad Air to update...later when things calm down a bit 😁
From an Apple information page:
Restart your device by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo. If you see the Connect to iTunes screen again, you'll need to reinstall iOS.
~Good luck
How do I do that without a computer 😢
I just did both my iPAD Pro 9.7" and iPHONE 6Plus OTA. The iPAD required a "pretty quick" recovery mode procedure and a not so quick firmware update (hum... what was in this?). My iPHONE 6Plus went without a hitch and is runnning great.
The Verge have given out a link from Apple as to what we have to do, I haven't read it yet but hope it helps.
Note for those without a computer they recommend asking a friend to allow you to connect or visit an Apple store.

Reading the comments people made to the Verge, the computer you connect to doesn't seem to need iTunes to actually be installed, just seems to want to be connected to a computer. No idea if that will work but passing on the info in case.
Tried to update over air and it seems like that was the problem. After 5th try it seems like it is recovering now.
Keep getting error 1671 so now I've turned off my AV program and will see if things speed up.
you have to restore to iOS 9.3.5 using iTunes. First download the .ipsw file. If you want let me know. Direct download using IDM. Same happened to me as well. I got the GM version on 9th september due to beta program. shift+restore to load the .ipsw file. Enjoy
You're not alone. Screwed up my phone completely. 😠
Same problem for me both iPad Pro 9.7 and iPhone 6s went to recovery mode after applying OTA iOS10 upgrade. Previous OS 9.3.5 on both devices....
Interesting one this one.
I have updated a number of iOS devices in the house however the ones that had been plugged into power when updating OTA all appeared to go into a recovery mode. It started the update, then bombed out from what I can see putting it into the recovery mode.
May be worthwhile making sure you have the power cable not plugged in when updating as it appears to be a problem from what I can see.
CJ.
IT is interesting that you saw this and you may be on to something. I only had an issue with my iPAD Pro and it was plugged in. My iPHONE went fine and was on battery. So, good catch!
