Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I updated my iPad Pro 9.7 and iPhone 6s and both devices now request to connect to iTunes. Once connected, I get a message that an error has occurred and that a restore is necessary. It reverts back to iOS 9.3.5
This is the first time this happens.
What is doing on?

This is very rare but it does happen sometimes, the update puts the device in recovery mode. If you have a backup of your devices just restore them as normal.
This is the downside of a big release that many many many people are trying to download/update at the same time.
My only tip is to hang in there and keep on trying 🙂
Same issue with my iPad. Plug it into iTunes and it'll take you back to 9.3.5
Appears that 10.0.1 may have been released already according to other posters
Thanks...my other iPhone 6+ went through smooth. On the iPad Pro, I saw on iTunes version 10.0.1, wonder if a sub version was just released after version 10.
Did you update over the air or via iTunes?
Over air as usual...
It seems that there is an issue with OTA (over the air updates). So far, everyone with issues has done the OTA method.

In my case I have 6 devices which I usually update at the same time. Let's hope that it will work now through iTunes.
Both my personal iPhone and Work iPhone and iPad did this. I updated itunes on the computer and plugged them in and they are installing their 10.0.1 updates now.
Same for me with my iPhone SE.

you need the newest version of itunes to update..
but...
OTA failed... (asking itunes)
itunes update is messed up... few times needed to end the task and start over to get the new version of itunes.
finally you connected your iphone to itunes and trying to update... new error message!

Same thing happened here. OTA update so once I have restored back to 9 will try to update via iTunes.
Same issue. When I plugged into iTunes to do the update I got a 1671 error. Eeek.
Now I tested my other iPad Pro via OTA and it worked. So out of 6 devices, 2 devices got (Recovery mode)
