I had this issue where :

  • Itunes upgraded to latest version
  • PC detects iphone. In My Computer files can be accessed. In Device Management Apple Iphone shows up. Even Microsoft's Phone Companion pops out whenever I plug in the phone
  • Itunes simply can not detect Iphone.

I had a chat with Apple Support tech guy named Chris and he suggested to do the following

  • Uninstall all Apple Programs - Apple Installer, Apple Mobile Device Suport, Apple Software Update, Bonjour and Itunes
  • Reinstall Itunes. Then restart PC and Iphone

Then problem solved!

After a couple hours on the phone with Apple Support Level 2, and then almost five hours in an Apple Store being helped by a succession of seven people, we finally just stumbled into a solution, and it is so easy, I'm actually unhappy we wasted all that time on this idiotic and unnecessary problem.

Here's what we did:

  • Plug iPhone into USB port
  • Open Control Panel
  • Open Device Manager
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers
  • Right-click Apple Mobile Device USB Driver
  • Choose Disable
  • After driver is disabled, unplug phone
  • Plug phone back in
  • Right-click Apple Mobile Device USB Driver again
  • Choose Enable
  • Voilà! Your phone should now appear both in Windows Explorer and Device Manager (under Portable Devices)

I don't know whether you actually have to unplug the phone after disabling, but that's the step we took, so it won't hurt to leave that step in.

This has worked for both my iPhone and iPad, and now on two machines.

Good luck!

It was simple for me.

What I did was went to 'device manager', found 'Apple iPhone' under 'portable device', right clicked and selected 'update driver software' and 'browse my computer for driver software'.

Next, i went to 'C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers' and clicked 'next' to let it run by itself, and the 'apple mobile device software' driver was automatically installed in my laptop and finally my iPhone is detectable by iTunes.

Hi all,

I have read through and tried the methods above but still having problems. Same computer (Win 10) recognises device but not itunes. I have gone into device manager and found that the phone shows up under "Portable Devices" but there is also an exclaimation icon under "other devices" as a USB <-> Serial Cable. I have tried the update driver manually and have found the file usbaapl64 as described, but when selected I get the error "The folder you specified doesnt contain a compatible software driver for your device...."

I have tried stopping the device, restarting both PC and iphone but still nothing. Getting desperate and would really appreciate guidance for what to do next.

Cheers

Oh my, I was hopping your installed driver would make it possible for the Windows Device Manager to detect your iPhone, but not what you expected, but we can work around and use a different computer in order to check if its just a driver issue or the iPhone iOS is out of date or iTunes 12.5.2 needs to be updated as well. Check support article: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support which suggests to make a backup on the working computer before doing an update with iCloud/iTunes.
