WWorked for me had to unpair my pencil to get the widget to re-appear.

My Pencil wasn't showing in Widgets and removing it and adding back in again did not help. I checked Bluetooth in Settings and the pencil was being shown as Not Connected.
The answer was to remove the device from this list and RePair by slotting it back into the port and clicking Pair when asked.
Then, the pencil appeared again in the Widget.

This was very helpful - I had the problem as described above and following these instructions paired the pencil and the battery charge levels again appeared in the widgets. Thank you.
I have this question too. I have tried every piece of advise offered here and nothing has worked so far. Seems impossible to me. Any comments Would be appreciated . Thanks
I think I am the biggest duffer using an iPad, followed all the instructions and finally found it and it works.

Running iOS 11.2 you can ask Siri “what is the battery charge on the Apple Pencil”. You may need Bluetooth to be running. Other variations of the question may work as well.
