Running out of application memory

This is bizarre. I just upgraded to El Capitan last week and since then this has happened, I'd say three times. Suddenly a Force Quit window will pop up telling me I've run out of application memory and that I should quit the apps that are listed as "not responding." If I try switching to those apps I can't. They've essentially frozen and I MUST quit them. I'm not the kind of person who has a dozen apps running at once. I normally only have 6 or 7 at most.


I've seen some other threads on this elsewhere that were of no help. Most concrete thing I read was "not enough RAM" or "System disk is full." Well I have 32 GB RAM so I doubt that's an issue. And my 500 GB system SSD has 104 GB available so I don't think that would be it. It IS weird though because the drive index, added up, would indicate I have 50 GB more open space than what I'm told by Get Info. I know some space is taken up by invisible system requirements but not 50 GB!


I've just looked at "About This Mac..." and THAT says I have 145 GB free. WTH?


Anyway, this app memory thing has NEVER happened to me. It's just since the El Capitan upgrade. Is there some bug with ElCap I'm not aware of?

It has been a long time since peek and poke would let you randomly access bits of memory. Modern OS' have memory protection to keep applications in line. An application might crash due to a SIG_FAULT, but it cannot get at another apps memory.

That's the theory.


I rarely have anything untoward happening with my systems. I've never had an running out of application memory error for example. However, I have run into error conditions that made no logical sense. For example, twice in about 10 years Time Machine got into an error condition that only required a restart to fix. I have among my Macs an Early 2015 Retina MacBook which I purchased when they were released. Twice in a year, with the lid closed, and power nap and wake for internet access disabled, it decided to turn bluetooth on and pair with my AV receiver.


I asked a senior advisor once why things like that happen. His response was sometimes things just happen.

If you are motivated to fix your Mac, then you must undo all the damage inflicted by the many system modifications you installed. If that is what you wish to do, please write back for instructions.


Many applications are crashing, including processes essential to its operating system. That simply does not occur on a Mac unaffected by ill-conceived garbage products purporting to fix things that aren't broken.

Odd. I thought the only login item I had listed was Dashlane. I went to Users>Login Items and Dashlane was the one NOT listed. I'm really confused by this. Disk Warrior wasn't listed. I don't even know what the HD backup app is.


Well I removed everything from the Login list. I didn't even want them there in the first place. Only one I would want is Dashlane but I'll live without it there.

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and run there for a while to see if you get the same issues. If not then there's a 3rd party software that is causing the problem.


I see you've run Monolingual. What did you have that app do? I would also remove it and not use it again.


If you still have problems boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down) and reinstall the system.


I also agree with John that Drive Genius is not needed.

Yup. Did that. I haven't had any more freeze-ups since then. I read that just launching in safe mode clears certain caches so maybe just that helped.


Monolingual is a stupid little thing that--supposedly--gets rid of all the various foreign language files that get loaded with software. I like getting rid of clutter. Apparently sometimes it just adds to the clutter.


I did remove Monolingual and Drive Genius and all those that were recommended. I had no argument with doing any of that--except for Spotify--I just don't like dealing with (inexplicably!) rude people.
