WatchOS3 - Mickey won't say the time

I've read that with the new Watch OS tapping on Mickey or Minnie will initiate a telling of the time in their voice. So far, I have not been able to get them to say the time by tapping. I have a first generation (pre-Series 1) watch, which hasn't had any issues with prior OS updates. To resolve this issue I've:

  • Removed and re added the watch face and attempted both Mickey and Minnie.
  • Ensured that the "Tap to Speak Time" is enabled.
  • Made sure that Silent Mode is not enabled on the watch.
  • Turned the Alert Volume all the way up to maximum.
  • Ensured that other alerts are working - which they are. Alerts for mail, messages, Facebook, and calendar entries all sound off.
  • Single tapped, double-tapped, and triple-tapped in trying to get them to say the time.
  • Restarted the watch and tried all the steps again.

I'm stumped. Anyone else having this issue? Is this only an option for the Series 2 watch? Any suggestions that I haven't tried yet?

OMGosh - she's talking again!!!!! This time I did nothing between messing with the settings to now. All I did was connect to wifi (normally I leave it off while I'm at my office and just use my data) and then I got side-tracked searching these types of forums for answers, and went back to tap on her and she told me the time!!!!!! Thank you benck75 - waiting with wifi on for her to learn a new "language" did the trick. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Hi

To use the Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse watch faces with their Tap to Speak Time feature, follow these steps:

  • Select the Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse watch face:

    https://help.apple.com/watch/#/apdb0c5fb937

  • Check that Tap to Speak Time is enabled:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Sounds & Haptics - turn on Tap to Speak Time.

  • When viewing the time on your watch, swipe up on the display to open Control Centre.

Check that Silent Mode is not enabled:

  • Ensure that your watch has access to Wi-Fi:
    • Check that your watch is connected to your iPhone via Bluetooth (Connected + green phone icon) and that your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi.
    • Or, if your iPhone is not currently connected via Bluetooth, check that your watch has connected to a trusted Wi-Fi network as a fallback (Connected + green cloud icon).
    • About Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on Apple Watch - Apple Support
  • Place your watch on the charger, connected to power.
  • Wait for around 15 minutes (it may take significantly longer) for the voices to download to your watch.
  • Test by waking the screen and then tapping the watch face.
