IOS 10 mail puts messages threads in seemingly random order

Since the IOS 10 Update email message threads on my iPhone 6+ are in a really weird order. There seems to be no real order to how the messages are displayed once you click on the thread.

The first message in the thread seems to be randomly placed under some of the replies, and occasionally the entire thread will be under one of the replies as if the message breaks were not detected.

I have Enabled the "Most Recent Messages on Top" setting which has meant the last message and your entry point to the thread is at the top (rather than in the middle with this setting disabled), but the message order still has the above quirks.

The issue is the same in my Office 365 mailbox and Hotmail.

From an article I found on CNet

"You can tap that blue-arrow button to view the subject lines of all the emails in a thread without leaving the main view of your inbox. It's a convenient way to locate a specific email in a thread. The messages in this expanded view are ordered so that the most recent message is at the top."

The double blue arrow pointing to the right located to the right of the date will drop down the list of related emails. Then you can click into just the one you want.

Also sometimes if you swipe the message to the left and click more you can click show related messages and it brings you to another screen with the list of messages. However this doesn't seem to consistently work for me and I can't figure out why it works sometimes and why it doesn't. My best guess is I think either all of the messages in the thread either have to be read or unread for this 2nd option to work.

The first option though definitely works thank goodness

If you swipe left, and select "More", at least on some messages, you will see "Show related Messages", which gives a display of only the messages in the thread like we had before. This is more cumbersome than just swiping, as we could do previously. I found a settings dialogue to control what swiping does, but it does not offer an option to show related messages.

I found that a swipe-right on the message body when in thread view gives you a Read/Unread button. Starting to get used to this....scroll through the thread, read the emails, swipe-right to mark ones I need to come back to later. With the swipe left options of flag/reply/delete as well, this is finally starting to make sense to me how it is supposed to be used.

don't see the double arrows you are referring to.

There is the upper left opposing arrows which open and close the email list versus full width display of the message;

And on upper right two opposing greater than less than icons for moving previous or next email message.

I do not see the double are at top right of every threaded email conversation as you put it.

Thanx

I'd also like to voice the same opinion. Email management using my iphone is horrendous. I would almost wait and check my emails on my laptop (if possible), especially for work when there are several messages linked together and not even bother with using my iPhone for this purpose. Apple, this is not a user-friendly approach for email management. It would be much appreciated if we can have it back like it used to be. Simple.

P.S.- My mother, who I recently encouraged to purchase an iPhone, is having difficulty navigating through her emails as well.

I didn't read all of the replies, but I agree with all of the comments questioning the logic of making this change. I've used thread-based email management in outlook for several years, and I thought the previous iOS process made sense. The new one is completely confusing, and I see no way to use it. Guess I'm going to have to disable it. Very frustrating. Cannot understand what Apple thought they were doing for users with this change. Please revert to the previous approach.
