Very slow typing on iOS10

After updating to iOS 10 on my iPhone 6, the typing in any app is extremely slow. The keyboard seems to freeze and then all that you typed appears at once. This is happening in every app, from safari to iMessage. It is impossible to type in any circumstance. I searched online but didn't find anyone with the same issue.

Everything that I could do has been done, like turning it off and on, reset (holding all buttons), uninstalling keyboards.

My iPhone 6 have plenty of memory available.

I hope someone here have a solution!

Thanks and all the best!

Thanks @barkoczy -- signing out of App Store might have helped a tiny bit for me, but the probs were basically still there.

Some good news to report from further experimentation: Turning 'Predictive' and 'Spell Checking' off seems to have significantly sped things up. (I also have 'Split Keyboard', '.' Shortcut, and Dictation off as I never use those.) It might also have helped that I had turned all the spell options before turning Auto-capitalization, Auto-correction, Enable caps lock, and Shortcuts back on.

Before doing that I had also turned off all notifications, background app refresh, internet connection, etc., with no change.

BUt while the speed is much improved, other problems remain -- including the double caps at the start of lines (like this one) -- which happens whether or not enable cap lock is on; and the alpha-numeric switch getting stuck in alpha still happens.

Anyone care to test the above to confirm?

P.S. I should have indicated earlier in this thread that I decided for various reasons not to use anthony's Swift Keyboard suggestion.

1- Capacity 60.22 GB, available 6.79 GB

2 - Just Messages and Mail open in the backgroup, always close/slide up all the apps after utilization. I used to write multi tasking code ;-) . Apps backgroup refresh is slide off.

3 - Safari is usually not loaded, right now it is open to answer you, one tab.

THere is something crooked in ios 10 new keyboard predictive and/or spell check, if Input both off I get the normal speed... IOS 10 Added to Much Code there it seems... Apple's way to force us to by the iPad Pro? Looking into other tablet, don't like to be treated this way with "my money"... I don't have $247B OffShore...

Same problem BUT I have found that the keyboard lag/freeze is just a symptom.

Did anyone get a weird screen when they did a hard reset right when the screen usually goes all black and before the apple shows up? I get a Q in a fuzzy background in various colors, usually a washed out green.

I tried all of the following solutions:

  1. Hard reset - helped for a few minutes.
  2. Turning off predictive text and spell check - nothing.
  3. Reset keyboard dictionary - Nothing.
  4. Restore from backup - nothing.
  5. Added Swiftkey keyboard - works to type (thank you for the suggestion) BUT still laggy/freezing other places.
  6. Turn iCloud off - yes that works but I obviously do not have access to my Notes, Contacts, photos, or anything else that is stored n the cloud. So it is an iCloud issue?
  7. Updated to 10 on another one of my 8 devices I have that uses the same iCloud account. That is working for now BUT we will see after a few hours of use.

Follow-up:

After updating one of my iPads to iOS 10 all of the symptoms on my iPhone are seemingly gone except the Q with the weird colored background, but it has faded? 1 full day and my regular keyboard seems to work.

From that and fixing it by turning off iCloud it seems to be a syncing issues between devices on different versions of the iOS

I still have an appointment at the Apple Store on Sunday - - we will see if I need to go.

***** Possible partial fix: *****

  1. Add one of the alternative keyboards (SwiftKey, Brightkey, Fleksy, …).
  2. Delete the English keyboard then add it back in.

AFAICS, that significantly reduces the lag.

OTher problems remain -- like the double caps on this line; alpha-numeric switch key becoming inoperative; …

Might have to do the above two steps more than once.

Per communication with a 3rd-party developer:

  • A few of their users reported that adding SwiftKey helped with the lag; however for the large majority, it did not help.
  • From their tests, iPad Air and iPad Air 2 seem to be affected the most.
  • They’re hopeful they can circumvent the issue with a few changes to the app; but it might be a month before their next release.

FWIW, I've switched to SwiftKey in the meantime in hopes that will work.

Also, I've now seen the same shift / alpha-numeric switch lock-up in Mail on another iPad after that was upgraded to the latest OS.

If this isn’t fixed in a month, I might do something I’ve never considered: buy an Android device.

I'm glad I came across this thread--I thought I was going crazy! I have noticed that the delay becomes worse the longer the document.

Never had an issue editing long multi paragraph documents in iOS 9. Using Notes or Pages or Ulysses, I would regularly edit 50-100 page documents with zero cursor or input delay using the onscreen keyboard or a bluetooth keyboard. In iOS 10 however, I'm experiencing long lag times editing and inputting characters and just generally moving the cursor around using the onscreen keyboard or a bluetooth keyboard. The longer the document is, the greater the delay/lag becomes.

I've tried everything--total restore, turning off all the predictive stuff, adding and removing keyboards. Nothing helps. I will have to stick with 9.3.5 until they come up with a solution. What's annoying about this is that they've stopped signing iOS 9.

Argh, Apple!

I hope you're working on this!
