iPhone 7 Plus Phone Call Sound Quality

So we just got 2 new iPhone 7 Plus' and I am noticing that the incoming call audio quality on both sounds strange. I have the Apple leather case on the phone and incoming audio sounds distant. Like it is coming from behind the phone or something. It almost sounds like the phone is on speaker phone but it isn't. Turning the volume down helps a bit but it seems off. Previous I had an iPhone 6 so I don't know how this compares to the 6 Plus.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

I found the solution: The phone was still wrapped up in the original plastic it came in, and that plastic was making the phone sound echo in a strange way. Hope it helps you too! The sound difference without that plastic wrap is massive.

i have the same problem with iphone 7 plus, when i am on the phone the voice is muffled and distant, not clear. Yesterday i went to the Apple store and replaced my phone but still the same problem. My only observation was when i got a replacement phone it was ios 10.0.3 and made one call from the store which was fine, very clear. After that i updated to ios 10.1.1 and now the call voice quality is the same, muffled and not clear.

I did another test, i tested 2 different iphone 7 plus with different providers and they sound the same. Also tested to call via viber and the call was very clear. So i guess don't go to the store to exchange it, it's not a hardware problem its probably software but for Apple to fix it they have to admit that there is a problem.

Hi. I already posted this on the other, similar strand, but I'm posting it here too, to be sure it's not overlooked. Like others in this discussion strand, I have an iPhone 7 Plus, and - at unpredictable times during a conversation - the person on the other end can suddenly barely hear me, or cannot hear me at all. I made an appointment at the Genious Bar, and the conclusion was that I was given a new phone. However, the new phone has the same problem. Along with everyone experiencing this problem, I'm finding it to be highly frustrating, having a phone that can't reliably be used to hold a conversation. Sometimes, during a conversation, there are multiple episodes of the other person suddenly not being able to tell what I'm saying. I sure hope this gets solved soon!

You can prove the mic by recording your voice with Voice Memo then play it back and checking if the recording encounters the same sound problem. Also call someone using Facetime and ask what the sound is like. In my case both sounded fine and Apple replaced my 7 Plus I requested before they post it that it's tested and proven to fully work and so far it seems to be working OK. The only issue is the the new phone S/N and Emei don't match my original box because the replacement came in a plain box with new stickers stuck on it with the right details. I contacted Apple for replacement stickers for the original box so it matches my phone for when I sell it and they couldn't oblige. I can't believe that they couldn't have printed out two of each sticker supplying a set for use on the original box. What is it with Apple, no matter what they do they can never do it 100% it's only ever 90% at best.....

Hello Steven,

Even I am having the same issue. Noticed it from day one. I own a iPhone 7 Plus 128 GB. The sound comes as hollow and its difficult to follow the conversation of the person calling. Its only for the calls. Even when i make a call and put the phone on speaker, the audio of the ring is very hollow. Music audio is excellent though. Even I have reduced the sound volume but its only helping marginally. The stereo speaker system for the Apple seems to be causing this 'Hollow" sound effect. Sad but true.

Hoping the good folks at Apple are looking into these audio complaints. While the suggestions offered in this forum didn't provide a solution for me, I appreciate knowing others are struggling with the same issues. I found it difficult to get the techs to understand the problem which added to the frustration. After multiple lengthy visits to the store (testing and resetting), 2 failed in-store replacements and hours with online tech (both Apple and Sprint), I elected to return my 7+ and go back to my ancient, but reliable iPhone 5 For now. Disappointing, especially since the latest photo and video upgrades were what I was waiting for, but I need consistent reliability on outgoing calls for work and callers said my voice often sounded distorted to the point where they couldn't understand me. (Since I do voiceover for a living, it's not something I could overlook. 😕)

Just wanted to let others experiencing this know they are not alone.

Chatting to family today and not even raising the topic of phones. Completely unprompted I was told "you must have changed your phone, we can hear you clearly now" Correct!

My first ever attempt at an iPhone and what a disappointment. Was not going to be stuck in a permanent loop of going to the store for replacement after replacement. Three 7+ handsets couldn't have all been faulty. Clearly an IOS issue.

Back to HTC again and not regretting a second of it. The SIM card came straight out of the 7+ and into the HTC and problem solved instantly so that also disproves it being a network or sim issue.

A shame but what is the point of a phone that fails at being a phone! Try harder Apple!

I also get this bad audio problem. I have discovered that I need to position the bottom of the phone very close (no more than 2cm) from my lips to get it to work at all. Unfortunately, when the bottom of the phone is that close to my lips the top is about 6cm from my ear. This then causes the phone to think I'm not holding it to my ear and it switches out of "black screen" on-a-call-call mode. When I then put it close to my ear the call ends as my ear or cheek touches the screen and must touch the red "end call" button. Totally useless!

Using the headphones for all calls is the only solution I have come up with. Clearly I have the wrong shape head for these phones!

It's really irritating that it is so difficult to use this phone to actually make a phone call. Please can Apple change the software so the audio "cone" is larger so the phone will pick up speech when the speaker is touching your ear.
