iPhone 7 Plus Phone Call Sound Quality

So we just got 2 new iPhone 7 Plus' and I am noticing that the incoming call audio quality on both sounds strange. I have the Apple leather case on the phone and incoming audio sounds distant. Like it is coming from behind the phone or something. It almost sounds like the phone is on speaker phone but it isn't. Turning the volume down helps a bit but it seems off. Previous I had an iPhone 6 so I don't know how this compares to the 6 Plus.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

I found the solution: The phone was still wrapped up in the original plastic it came in, and that plastic was making the phone sound echo in a strange way. Hope it helps you too! The sound difference without that plastic wrap is massive.

Does anyone in this discussion have an email address - or a snail mail address - and perhaps also an official's name to whom I can write, at some high level within Apple Support, to ask what they will do about this problem?

In my case I have the 7+, exchanged it for a new one, and the exact same problem still exists. People I n the other end of a phone conversation - at random times - cannot hear me. The same is true using a hands-free Bluetooth connection while in the car, so I don't think it's: a microphone problem.

The phone is essentially useless until this problem is solved!

I Emailed links to the appropriate call quality community strings to Apple Support so they can read about our call quality issues for themselves. I suggest if we all do this Apple may acknowledge the fault exists and inform us what they plan to do about it. At the moment their opinion is that millions of iPhone 7/7P's have been sold and this is a minor issue. It would be interesting to find out if this is in fact a global issue, I would suspect it is as we're surmising it's software related.

It will be interesting to find out how your replacement phone performs, quite a few of us have already been here and found that replacement phones exhibited the same fault. Are you sure the Genius Team are able to replace your mic and speaker in a couple of hours, standard practice is to return faulty items to Apple for repair. Good luck anyway, let us know how it goes.

They have ran out of Iphone 7 at the apple store have ordered one in for me.

I asked if many people complained about this issue the apple guy said no, then the next person after me was compalining about same thing! I said if you go to apple blog tons of people having this issue he said the internet attracts that stuff... I wonder if apple has this site so the complaints arent made public!!!!!!!

I am fed up

Well, things got interesting when I returned to the Apple Store. Evidently, the Geniuses replaced the mic and speaker, but after powering the phone up the Home button and Touch ID no longer functioned. So, they handed me a new phone and said that's that. I received no other explanation or information. Haven't been able to try a call to test the new phone because Apple doesn't support U.S. Cellular, and my phone will not place a call. So, I get to go to my local U.S. Cellular store tomorrow for the 7th or 8th time in two weeks.

After having my 7+ replaced due to poor call quality the new replacement is exhibiting the same issue. I'm now of the opinion that this is a software issue so having phone's continually replaced won't resolve the problem, the right IOS update will. This begs the question will Apple rectify the fault with the IOS 10.2 update, according to the beta testers no but that's not to say they won't in the final release. Perhaps there is truth in the suggestion Apple may be trying to restrict this issue to the Apple Community where it won't be read by the wider public. On more than one occasion I've Emailed Apple Support links to the various strings covering this call sound issue so they do know about it but continue to deny the fact. When I manage to get Apple Support to understand there is a wide spread issue, they respond with yes but it's a minute % of iPhone 7/7+'s sold. It's almost a case of flooding social media site's like Facebook with details of the fault and even running a vote to see how many people are experiencing the problem, I'm not sure how you this....

It's quite amazing that Apple are refusing to acknowledge, and fix, this problem. I guess it shows how few people use the iPhone to make telephone calls. It's also difficult to diagnose as one assumes the fact that the other party cannot hear you is related to a poor network signal.

I'm convinced this is a software issue because :-
1) Hey Siri works from the other side of the room, indicating the microphone hardware is ok.

2) Voice Recorder works perfectly again indicating the microphone hardware is ok.

It seems pointless for Apple to be replacing the hardware 3, 4 or in some cases 5 or 6 times. Wake up and smell the coffee Apple, this is a audio software issue when making calls, get your tax free programmers on the case and get it fixed.

I have some contacts in the UK tech and consumer affairs media. I'll flag it up to them and see if it's a story that could run with. This might then generate a flood of fault reports which would finally force Apple to look into this issue and get it resolved ASAP.

I phoned Apple Support using my faulty replacement 7+ and guess what they couldn't hear me properly, they now had proof of my replacement phone exhibiting the same call quality issue as the phone it replaced. During this call they insisted I take the phone to the nearest Apple store for them to interrogate the fault at which point I suggested they would learn more by finding out what was wrong on my original faulty phone to which they agree'd and promised to phone me back the following day. True to their word they phoned me the following day to inform me no hardware fault was found suggesting it's a software issue as you've suggested.

Like you I just don't understand Apple continuing to deny any knowledge of this fault. During my many calls to Apple Support about this issue I've occasionally managed to get the Apple rep to understand there is a wide spread issue evident on the Apple community forum to which the general reply is this reflects a minute percentage of faulty phones compared to the millions sold. This response suggests that we need feedback from outside the community forum to reflect how wide this defect is spread. Publicising the issue via social media may be a way of attracting interest beyond the community forum. I'd just like Apple to acknowledge the fault exists and what they plan to do about it.

At the moment it seems as though the Beta release of IOS 10.2 isn't rectifying the issue, that's not to say the final release won't, who knows.
