iPhone 7 Plus Phone Call Sound Quality

So we just got 2 new iPhone 7 Plus' and I am noticing that the incoming call audio quality on both sounds strange. I have the Apple leather case on the phone and incoming audio sounds distant. Like it is coming from behind the phone or something. It almost sounds like the phone is on speaker phone but it isn't. Turning the volume down helps a bit but it seems off. Previous I had an iPhone 6 so I don't know how this compares to the 6 Plus.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

I found the solution: The phone was still wrapped up in the original plastic it came in, and that plastic was making the phone sound echo in a strange way. Hope it helps you too! The sound difference without that plastic wrap is massive.

Mine cover is open also there.

I've also tried to deactivate the Phone Noise Cancellation before but only a little improvement was the result.

Removing the cover instead changed everything also reactivating the noise cancellation.

On my iPhone 7 Plus it's like that the "skin" cover make the mic become dull like the phone is in a box.

Maybe because the cover is removing the vibration of the phone shell itself.

Really strange but believe it or not, it works every time :O

In the past I took off the cover and called people - they claimed the quality was just as bad as with the cover. I haven't tried to test removing the cover since, but I am willing to give it a shot, again. I always like it when people experiment and don't want to dissuade anyone from trying to help.

I am really hoping it works! I would LOVE it if it works! I remain skeptical, but hopeful.

This is caused by the sound being transmitted to the speaker in the ear piece, but also to the speaker on the bottom of the phone. the back of my phone rattles like a freight train when I am on a call. It means you have to find the perfect place to hold the phone so you can hear your caller. but the speaker at the bottom doesn't transmit sound all over the room. Go to the Accessibility Menu in your iPhone, and there is a sliding bar that you can slide all the way to the right, which will make all call sound go to the top speaker, and nullify the bottom speaker altogether. The problem with that is when you use heaphones to listen to music, it's in mono, so you have to go back and reset the slider.

Really? It doesn't on my iPhone 7+. What it means is that yours is probably defective. You should have it checked out. Make a genius bar appointment.

Thanks for that. My solution is two fold. One is that when I'm out and about listening to music, I can take and make calls on my Beats headphones. The other is that I'm going to buy a small bluetooth device that I can have next to the phone, so that when it rings, I can just put the device in my ear and the call is answered automatically. I'm confident that I will never actually have to use the phone up against my ear ever again.

I am also having this problem with my one week old $800 phone. I hope Apple isn't getting like all the other companies - telling us to "read an article" and "turn down the volume". A week after purchasing something at this cost it should - as Apple products used to do - work flawlessly. The sound on my phone actually oddly varies in volume (sitting in the same place) and sounds really funny?

Yes, I am also having the same problem. I got the iPhone7 Plus about a year ago and almost immediately started getting complaints from people I called (or that called me) that they couldn't hear me very well. Comments ranged from "you sound very distant, or "are you in a tunnel", to "are you holding the phone away!" I have had the phone replaced already but I still have exactly the same problem.

I tried turning of Noise Cancellation, but it made no difference.

Like other people on this discussion, I use an Otterbox Strada case (you want the best protection for a $900 phone, right?). When I take the phone out of the case, it does seem to improve things, but not 100%. So there must be a connection between this Otterbox case and others like it. Does it block one or more holes that are necessary to the good working of the microphone? Who knows, but neither Apple nor Otterbox seem to be very forthcoming with any advice, which is very disappointing. I have a case open (no pun intended) with Otterbox to see if they have anything useful to add, which I will post here as an update.

Other than that, I feel like I'll have to go for another replacement, which means I'll have to go back on my iPhone6 for a while. But that's not all bad... at least people will be able to hear me!

I have basically given up on this problem. I don't want to take the phone to Apple, I can almost hear the pre programmed responses. Now when I get a call I ask the caller to be patient while I find the right place to hold the phone so we can both hear each other. It's a big disappointment for such an expensive phone, and my iPhone 5 didn't do it. It's just too much technology, too fancy. I mentioned in a couple of previous posts about buying a bluetooth headset, and I think it's going to come down to that.

Hi there, Steven Fisher1!

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you are having issues with the sound quality on the iPhone 7 Plus. I know how important it si to be sure the sound is working properly at all times. Check out this article here If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker. This will give you some steps to try to see about getting the issue taken care of.

Cheers!
