Why apple (Macbook) and not Sony Vaio, hp,etc....?¿

Hello everybody! Hope u r doing well in this pre-Christmas time.

I was thinking on "buying" a new laptop for Christmas although I am not very sure which one to order. The thing is that I have never been a Mac user but I'm starting to reconsider this since I find Apple's laptops extremely interesting and amazing.

My main doubt is about the main differences between Apple and Microsoft. I have always used Microsoft Windows in all my previous pc's or laptops. Is there a real improvement in a good way, innovation?what are the main differences between both ways of understanding computing and entertainment? I truly think a 64
Mb video card controller is not a very good deal. Is the CPU speed and screen brightness and resolution such a great thing a lot of people say?

Thanks very much in advance, lets see if u guys help me in making up my mind,

take care and...enjoy life!

I always use a PC and switched to Macs last year. The MacBook is the best computer I have ever owned. The Graphics card uses diffent amounts of memory as needed and depending on how much ram you have installed. By Apples specs it uses a minimum of 80 mb with the minimum memory installed.

I have found since I switched to MacBook that I can finally multitask like I was always wanting to with the PCs.

Hi there

I was a Windows user all the time,,, but since I got my First Mac (Macbook) few days ago. I think I can't live without it anymore. Like OS X, widgets, ... what I like the most is it's very stable. Even this is my first time on a Mac. It's very very easy to use. Even u find something that you dont' know what to do, just do a little search here or ask a few questions. I will find your answer. That's from my few days experience. Compare it windows, I found that if I got stuck, it took longer to solve it, or even can't find why or what coz the problem.

That's my three days experience. I Hope that helps.

I switched 6 months ago, having had two beautiful Sony VAIOs before I bought the macbook. I decided on the macbook rather than another VAIO because 1) the VAIOs were way more expensive, 2) I've never been thrilled with Sony support or service, and 3) I was curious about the Mac OS and why people love it so much. I wasn't unhappy with Windows, and if the Macbook couldn't use Windows, I'm not sure I would have made the switch.

I never use Windows now. Mac OS is much more customizable. I use tons of freeware in my daily work and play, which I never would have dared do on my VAIOs for fear of viruses. These programs help me design my computer to work the way I want it to work. Everything on this computer looks good and feels good.

A second reason I'm so happy with my mac is the great support. When I needed repairs for discoloration and RSD, they were easy to get done and done quickly - halfway around the world from where I bought the computer! The community on these boards has been fantastic at helping me solve every single newbie problem I've had. And, like I said, there's lots of professional-quality freeware donated to mac users by first-rate designers. How good is that?

I would say that the smallest differences between Apple and PCs are in the hardware. My macbook is gorgeous, but VAIOs are, too. Screens on both computers are sharp and beautiful. My macbook has had some hardware problems, and so did my VAIOs. Where I would look for the differences are in the OS and support, and in these areas, Mac excels. Where do PCs excel? Games.

I agree with the other posts.

I too switched recently (June) and have not regretted it at all.
The hardware looks fantastic OSX walks the walk of what windows talks the talk for!

For example, Windows Movie Maker, Brilliant software when it came out for a home user, however you could never burn dvd's straight from it.

With Mac everything is so integrated, you build your websites in iWeb with a window open showing your media files from iPhoto, iTunes & iMovie.

Also, it is much much more stable, Okay you could look around the forum here and find loads of people with random shutdown issues (though i think most of these are sorted, discolouration (which i do have, but apple will replace for me when i take it in) but what you have to bear in mind is that this is a support forum.

Don't be put off by all the people out there who have never used mac telling you mac's are rubbish because they are wrong, there is alot of them out there and they almost convinced me to go dell.

And if you just need a bit of rough you can always use parallels or bootcamp

Best Wishes
Nick

The MacBook is a great notebook - fast very fast - looks great too and of course the OSX is fun and easy to get used to.

HOWEVER - there is one thing I'm not completely satisfied with - DISPLAY - compared to Sony Vaio, the MacBooks display is not as good. Fist off, viewing angles are decent at best, backlight ditribution is somewhat uneven. I compared my MacBook with Sony Vaio side by side and I must say the Sony's display is way better. Also - the SONY 13" offers a descrete video card - another thing MacBooks lack in.

Overall I'm very happy with the MacBook - about $500 cheaper than the SONY 13". But I thought I'd be fair and not only praise the MB's.

i have been using macs since i was 7, that was '96. and they have greatly improved since. there no more the, schools gaming comp, but are the pro's choice. i can say they rock. i use an iMac G5 for my song editing and movie/dvd making. it rocks, cannot be happier with it. if you have the money for a macbook pro i would go with that because its got its own graphics card. and you can get either a glossy or flat screen. but if your just trying out mac for size(like a shoe) then the macbook or mac mini is your best bet.

I've own Vaos and Dells. You get nothing special owning these. Especially when Sony makes new models every 3 months. They were collecting dust and I sold them. The bottom line it runs Windows with basically the same hardware inside. I've never been happier owning Macs with their OS and now you can run both. Unless you play games, the video card that Apple decides to put in their products is sufficient.
When you buy any laptop, you have to accept the fact that the video card becomes obsolete and not replaceable.

I must say I like my MacBook, I have had some troubles but then they were solved.
However I am a 80% Office - Photoshop user and in terms of speed, the MacBook´(2ghz with 2gb) is really very very very slow. My wifes Dell with similar specs is much faster.

CS2 and even Apples own aperture do not run well and caused the fans to "overreact"
Using Office suite, integrating all applications with the entourage functionality doesn't function at all, it just stops.

But for the rest my apple is great as a fun machine. I still use my XP desktop for critical "money-making" things.

Would I buy it again ... no I would definitely get a Dell even with all the Windows negatives ...

Jan-
Now that Apple is using the intel CPUs on their product line, I really don't see any reason to buy a Sony laptop with that Sony logo on the top, unless you specifically need that DELL for work or business. Most every software is crossed platform right now or in the process of converting and there are tons of software that are better on the Mac platform anyway. People think that Macs are totally different technology and ask the same questions over and over. The only difference is the Operating System, the Apple Logo on top and the design. As for the specs, the macs come out ahead.

As for problems, I have none.

Let me tell you something, I have been using Windows for 14 years and I have hated every second of it. Then, 3 months ago I got a MacBook and I just love it, specially the OS.

And let me tell you something else, very long ago, Sony used to make quality products, but not anymore. I have had a VAIO, a PSP, a Sony TV, you name it. Qualitywise, they are all rubbish (in my opinion). What makes a VAIO even more rubbish, or any other Laptop for that matter, is the rubbish software made by a company called Microsoft.

I switched about 4 months ago. Well initially tried a MacMini just to see what 'those' Apple people were going on about. Well since that day i've powered my PC up about 5-6 times, the last time was to recover data and restore to factory settings.

The Mac isn't for everyone, especially those who don't want to change. Somethings aren't great at the moment (photoshop, office and any other s/w thats not universal).
But on the whole its great, no more worries about virus/spyware etc (not to say it wont happen, but at the moment its not an issue). A couple of weeks ago i bought a MacBook and find it superb, wasn't too sure about the keyboard at first but have since found to one of the best for typing i've used.

My advice, try it. If you don't like it sell it on. You'll lose less on an apple resell than a Vaio.

I can vouch for that. Just sold my ibook G4 on Ebay for more than my original asking price. Now trying to sell the Sony Vaio. First round didn't meet my reserve so I'm trying it again. Vaio cost way more originally than the ibook, is one year newer and I've got no takers. Only used the Vaio for two applications that I couldn't do on the Mac. Every time I used it, it was painful. My son, a devout pc user, came home for Thanksgiving, played with my Macbook and now....he's the proud owner of a black mac and I've got to sell his one year old Vaio on ebay also. GO MAC.
