iPhone 7 Overheating

My new iPhone 7 overheats as soon as it starts to play video, download files, or play music. It even heats up when I'm taking photos.

I found the following article given a fix. I reseted the phone and started as a clean, new phone setup and still heats up.

Here is a quote of the article:

How to fix the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus overheating problem with these solutions:

  • There could be a good chance that a third-party application is the cause of the overheating Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The best way to check this issue is by holding down power and Home button until the screen goes black then remove finger from home while continuing to hold power. Once you see the Apple logo-hold the volume up button until the springboard loads. If the device is in Safe Mode the tweaks will be gone under the setting menu. If the problem is gone then you know it’s being caused by a third-party app. You can try uninstalling one by one to track it down or go for a factory reset.
  • Before you factory reset the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, it’s recommended to wiPe the cache partition of the smartphone (Learn how to clear the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus cache). Select on Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage. Then select on Manage Storage. After that tap an item in Documents and Data. Then slide unwanted items to the left and tap Delete. Finally tap Edit > Delete All to remove all the app’s data.

Is anyone else having this problem, and do you have a fix or solution?

Thanks,

Mine (my second 7 32gb following Apple replacing my first without question) hasn't overheated since I updated to 10.0.2 and turned off Emergency SOS in privacy>Location services>System services

Could be coincidence...I'll continue to monitor.

Everyone: just take it back to Apple and get a replacement. At least they'all know you're having problems. The more people that do that, the more attention it brings to the issue.

My new iPhone 7 was also overheating and had a drained battery the first several days after I purchased it. I finally discovered my issue: when I purchased it in store, I was in the middle of an iCloud restoration that was not completed.

So from then on, every time I was on my phone it was trying to restore iCloud in the background, thus causing it to overheat. I went to install the iOS system update and it told me I couldn't update until my iCloud finished restoring, and that is when I figured out what happened. I was able to pause the iCloud restore and perform the system update. It has been working fine ever since.

SO after inspection I found out that the lightning cord I used to charge my phone was a generic one. Generic Not an apple cord. Last night I plugged it in with an apple cord and it did not heat up.

NOw I have an issue with some albums that I had in my music library that are not playing.

bbattery life is not bad. Phone is on heavy use from 8 am. YouTube, internet, messaging, insta, ETC.. everything but phone calls I guess And it lasts till about 6ish.

ON sundays where I have to entertain my wife with normal use it'll last till 10 pm. Good 14-16 hours.

I'm having the same problem. I have found it to be the YouTube app that is to blame. If I had used the YouTube app, the next time I went back to my iPhone 7, it would be hot and I would lose lots of battery power...say 40% in 45mins. Also, in the lock screen would be the play/pause control, as if something was still playing in YouTube, even though it wasn't. Once I fully closed YouTube (double -click the home button and swipe away the app), the problem stopped. Now, if I watch a YouTube video, I make sure that I fully close the app each time until YouTube resolve the issue. BBC iPlayer and other video playing apps do not cause this problem.

I'm just off to tell YouTube now.

Hope this helps you too.

I had a problem with my iPhone 7 overheating this morning and throughout the day. I could barely use it and every minute or less, it would send me back to the locked home screen. The power was being drained at an incredible rate as well. I could hardly keep it charged. I ended up going into my settings -> general -> reset and selecting "Reset All Settings". This almost instantly caused my phone to start cooling down and all apps started working and the phone was not acting up. It also started charging again! Hope this helps someone.

Me too and I'm so disappointed.. it seems a lot of people have the same issue and Apple doesn't do anything in this regard!

Apple won't do anything about any problems you have unless you let them know. And posting in this forum isn't letting them know. If you have a problem with your phone use the Contact Support link at the top of every page. Better yet, install the Apple Support app on your phone, and you can use it to contact support directly.

However, I'm not sure what your "issue" is. There are several mentioned in this thread. The most common one is the phone gets warm. That is completely natural and expected. It is only an "issue" if it gets so hot that it displays an overtemperature message and shuts down. Does yours do that? If it does, you must contact Apple, because there is a hardware problem with your phone.

There’s a 99% chance this is due to the YouTube app. This happened twice in the past 11 months, both after an iOS update. If you read the rating/reviews of the app in the App Store you’ll read many people reporting the same issue. It’s a very common problem with this app that keeps on reoccurring. Almost makes you feel they are doing this on purpose because they hate iPhone. This is the only app that has ever caused this issue for me and I’ve been an iPhone user for over a decade.

This is the fix. First remove the app. Next do a soft reset by holding the power and volume down buttons at the same time till it restarts. Do that after the phone batter has completely drained and you have fully charged it. Remove from charger after the phone restarts. Simply removing the app will only fix the heating issue, the battery will continue draining quick because it requires recalibrating.

I have a novelty, alias is not much news, but a confirmation same, I tested on iphone 5s a 6s and a 7, the model 5s did not show heating, now the models 6s and 7 have presented and every time you are in the street it leaves Of a network and changes the tower, the cell heats abnormally is not enough to be a superheat itself, but they get really hot, both with ios 10, I tested the same thing in another 6s with 9.3.5 and it does not happen Absolutely nothing, does not heat anything. After taking my 6s in attendance twice, and there is nothing on the hardware, and seeing other 6s and up to model 7 in question, the problem is in IOS10, but not everyone is noticing the warming, but this does not feel Or indifference, well the problem that has occurred since the first version of IOS and until today has not been corrected, so we have hope only in the 11 who knows. In model 7 I noticed that the problem is a little worse in other situations as basic activities and until connected in wifi it heats a little behind, problem goes back and forth. But the worst of warming is how much this on the street moving with or without the 4g on, which is the same with the 6s. Apple Help Please correct heating problems on your devices!

I had the same today, getting hot and keep shutting down to home scree, I done what you said and it cured the proble, I then thought I would do a full factory reset and restore using an iCloud back up, it Restored ok but when it was half way through restoring the apps it went back into its gett hot and shutting down to home screen log on, I had to then do the reset all settings again and now not shutting down, I will wait for the apps to restore and do the latest update 11.2.1 and see how it goes.

My wife got first iPhone 7 from T-Mobile, it was overheating (hot, not warm) when she was talking on the phone. You couldn't keep the phone near your ear. Went to Apple store, they have replaced it. The second one is getting warm-hottish. Will try to reset network settings and find out which app is creating the problem. I think there is a iOS 10 problem, some apps running in the background are using too much power.
