CarPlay problems after iOS 10 Update

Ever since iOS 10 my CarPlay functions have been very glitchy, mostly when I got navigation going on at the same time. Here's a few things I encounter:

  • Music freezes (can't change songs, can't tap into the app if I tap out of it, icon zooms in once it gets past freezing)
  • Siri mutes herself when reading texts (only seems to happen when I listen to a text straight from a notification
  • CarPlay itself randomly disconnects for a couple seconds at a time (although it MAY be my wire but it has yet to show any tears)

Also some other pet peeves from BEFORE iOS 10 that are still happening now with Music:

Some radio station genres found in Apple Music on iPhone/iPad/Mac are not listed in CarPlay

Anyone else w/ CarPlay suffering from these problems?

I'm seeing similar problems in my brand-new Kenwood DNX893S. It's believe that *some* of the issues I'm having are Kenwood related (there's already been one major firmware release that improved things), but hearing about these other issues makes me thing it's on the Apple side.

10.2 came out today, which is exciting, however there is no mention of any CarPlay fixes in the release notes. 😟

Hard to fault Lexus for a problem with a new Apple release when the iPhone has worked fine for many years in this vehicle. Somewhat ridiculous to ask people to update their phones and then not have a solution or way to revert to the previous edition of IOS that worked. Apparently they don't work with the largest auto manufacturer in the country in their beta testing.

Techykay! You are my lifesaver!!! I've been going round and round with Apple personnel at the store and my Acura dealer. I even called the hardware manufacturer for the CarPlay in Acura. You solved the problem. Thank you so much, have a very happy new year! Apple should be ashamed that they didn't send this out to all of their stores' Genius Bar. Not so genius, huh?

Yes, but different symptoms.

my new Peugeot 3008 screen gets black when choosing radio, and other multimedia functions. disconnecting iPhone does not make any change. The Car is to be stopped, electrical system turned completely off to reset failure.

Seems to be a combination of using Phone, Siri, Message functions that trigger this failure mode. my iPhone is updated to 10.2

Car Seller / Service is only giving vague hints and no solutions.

I do not known how to agrees this issue, as i have no chance of seeing interface or update CarPlay software or have any feed-back sent to Apple (visible to me)

I have no track history from previous versions, so Apple please come on and help us on out on this problem??

Three times while driving and using Apple Maps to get directions CarPlay quit on me and I had to reboot the entertainment system in my car to get it back. This was extremely frustrating as I was driving across unfamiliar areas of the country at night.

I eventually switched to my 2016 VW GLI's on-board nav. Incidentally, I found it superior to Apple Maps in about every way. Better turn instructions, on-screen lane guidance and it even rerouted me for traffic (it's tied into SiriusXM's traffic feed, which I apparently get for three years. Cool. )

I still tried to use CarPlay to listen to Audible but that too would randomly just stop. I think it occurred whenever I'd lose my signal. But I had downloaded the book precisely to avoid that.

Very disappointing for my for a big road trip in a new car.

I had similar problems after IOS10 update.

Now on 10.2 for iphone 6+.

I use carplay in Hyundai i Load.

Main problem is getting the car unit to actually see the iphone and "sync" if that's what it does.

It worked intermittently after inserting and removing the cable several times.

Finally got 10 different cables and 3 different phones and tested them all.

The only configuration that was 100% reliable was when using a very short cable I have, about 20cm long. This works every time but is not very inconvenient for car use.

I can only guess something in the serial interface has changed which makes the connection marginal for longer cables with higher impedance. It is the same if vehicle is not running so its not caused by ignition noise on the cable.

In summary, try a short cable or maybe apple can fix whatever they changed in the lightning serial interface for IOS10.

Apple Car Play really went berserk with iOS 10.2. The symptoms include everything mentioned here and more. Sometimes it freezes up other audio such that the radio is not selectable and the volume control does not operate. It's so all over the place that it's hard to describe or identify possible culprits. Siri often deaf. Generally worthless at present. It seems at its worse when plugging the phone into the car; this sometimes prompts immediate freeze. iTunes and Pandora inaccessible. Pandora constantly "loading." All of this has been great in the past, for one full year. 2016 Buick Regal, and I'm more suspicious of Apple than Buick Intellilink at this time. What seems the best way to compare/contrast, and, more importantly, get an idea of when "normal and impressive" will be restored?

As a general advice, try re-pairing your car after deleting it from your iPhone:

Settings > General > CarPlay > [your car name] > Forget this car

If possible, also delete the phone from the CarPlay settings of your car infotainment.

That did the trick when I had problems in my VW Touran 2016 after updating to iOS 10. By the way, no more problems ever since.
