CarPlay problems after iOS 10 Update

Ever since iOS 10 my CarPlay functions have been very glitchy, mostly when I got navigation going on at the same time. Here's a few things I encounter:

  • Music freezes (can't change songs, can't tap into the app if I tap out of it, icon zooms in once it gets past freezing)
  • Siri mutes herself when reading texts (only seems to happen when I listen to a text straight from a notification
  • CarPlay itself randomly disconnects for a couple seconds at a time (although it MAY be my wire but it has yet to show any tears)

Also some other pet peeves from BEFORE iOS 10 that are still happening now with Music:

Some radio station genres found in Apple Music on iPhone/iPad/Mac are not listed in CarPlay

Anyone else w/ CarPlay suffering from these problems?

Hi everybody, I did not scroll through all 9 pages of this question/problem about CarPlay, but definitely identify with many of the issues here. After updating to iOS 10, I kept getting messages like "no device connected" or "device not compatible" on my Honda Civic 2016. I have tried everything from "forgetting" the phone via the CarPlay app, resetting the phone, power on/off the phone etc to no effect. Also changed cables multiple times, and now using Apple cable. So ... here is what temporarily works for me. I primarily play OFFLINE music (meaning music that is physically on my phone), DOWNLOADED podcasts, and use maps/messages apps while driving using CarPlay. What I do is turn car on WITHOUT plugging in phone, unlock phone, open the app I want, in my case mostly Music. Start playing the songs from the phone first. THEN I plug the phone into the car (by now the Honda interface is up and ready). Then voila, CarPlay works and music switches over to the car speakers. Same with Podcasts and Maps. If I need directions to go anywhere, I start the guidance thing on the phone first without plugging it into the car's dedicated CarPlay usb. Then I plug phone in and a few seconds later, map guidance starts talking to me via car speaker and map interface shows up. To test all this, I left the phone in the car and went into the grocery store. Came back, phone is already plugged in, started the car and the incompatible messages came back. My solution, while slightly inconvenient, works for the time being. As long as I can use CarPlay interface to play music, occasionally text and use map, I'm happy. One more thing ... I noticed the same thing with AirDrop after upgrading to iOS 10. I often AirDrop pictures between my phone and my MacBook laptop. With previous iOS I did not have to "unlock" or wake phone up, but since upgrade, AirDrop only shows up AFTER I unlock/wake phone with my touch I.D. or passcode. It seems like the device must be ON and UNLOCKED for communication to work. If phone goes back to lock mode, I notice the AirDrop receiver on the laptop shows no device found even though it is sitting 2 inches away from the computer. Sorry for long post, and hope this helps 🙂

same problem here... after updating my phone I can' not control the volume when using Apple Carplay.... kinda aggravation to have to keep unplugging my phone to adjust the volume ... and yes i also agree a wee bit disappointed in the apps that work with Apple carplay. Hopefully and update comes out soon to fix this problem

Still love Apple products though....

2016 Honda Accord CarPlay for my iPhone 6 works when it wants to since the 10. Update. Maps are a hit and miss. Frequently all I can do is unplug and plug into my girl's iPhone 6. This usually resets it. Turning on and off the car, resetting the phone to factory settings and even convincing apple to replace my phone entirely has not resolved this!!! This incident has essentially rendered my phone and vehicle a senseless duo as my job requires me to be on the road 80% of the time! This is crazy! I will inevitably need to switch to Android soon. Just really a bummer! Apple CarPlay is one of the key selling points to this new vehicle purchase! Really disgusted with Apple. Without a fix by the new year, Apple will have lost me forever.

I have a brand new Kenwood DDX6903S Excelon with CarPlay. It initially seemed to work fine with iOS 9. The iOS 10 upgarde caused all sorts of havoc. The update to 10.1 fixed a lot of the issues. The only two major issues I see that Apple must address are:

1) CarPlay music doesn't work for long and it starts "skipping". Its fine through Bluetooth, but not through CarPlay. That is pretty much unacceptable.

2) CarPlay disconnects occasionally and you need to unplug and reconnect.

These items need addressed by Apple and /or Kenwood, as I purchased the unit because of CarPlay and still do not have a functioning system. It's kind of like stealing. Does anyone know if there are upgrades for firmware that nbeed to be done on the head units themselves?

I too also had the same problem with iOS 10.1.1. After I updated my phone to iOS 10 I couldn't listen to music through USB on my Honda Civic. After waiting for the 10.1.1 update I decided to contact Apple directly. After 30 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong with either my phone or my car, they told me since I did not have any songs on my phone meaning any iTunes songs I purchased, that was the reason. I still don't understand really why it mattered to have any iTunes music on my phone for my car to recognize the USB port, but it worked. I downloaded a song on iTunes and plug in my USB after my car was on. Once my car was on it recognize a USB port and I was able to use Spotify and Other music from my USB port.

Not sure if that helps anybody else but it definitely helped me.

I had similar problems. After the last iphone update to V10 bluetooth wouldn't work at all. Wired in was intermittent at best. Very unreliable. Worked with Honda techs and couldn't fix it. Wrote an email to CEO and VP of Service and about a week later received a call from Adriana. She walked me through rebooting the Civic. After that we tested and everything worked fine. Both Bluetooth and Wired.

Rebooting the system is easy. Just hold down the audio button, you will get a screen asking if you want to reboot, select YES and a few minutes later you should be in business.

I hope this helps. It worked for me.

Contacted Lexus corporate and the local dealership and was told that the Lexus 2006 radio could not be updated and that IOS 10.1 is not compatible with Lexus products. Android phone is going to be cheaper than a new car. Unbelievable that 10.1 was released with the multitude of know Bluetooth connectivity issues. Also unbelievable that Apple iPhone constantly asks you to update your phone software and then you can't use it in a vehicle in which it has worked for many years or revert to the earlier edition. Apple should at least provide a way to revert the previous edition that worked with the vehicle.

Lexus, which is owned by Toyota, has suffered from the same issues Toyota has for years.... Their in-car systems are crap when it comes to connectivity. Updates to fix problems are pretty much nonexistent.

The problem is NOT iOS. The problem is that the people who code for Toyota's infotainment systems like to cut corners and ignore the documented APIs.
