CarPlay problems after iOS 10 Update

Ever since iOS 10 my CarPlay functions have been very glitchy, mostly when I got navigation going on at the same time. Here's a few things I encounter:

  • Music freezes (can't change songs, can't tap into the app if I tap out of it, icon zooms in once it gets past freezing)
  • Siri mutes herself when reading texts (only seems to happen when I listen to a text straight from a notification
  • CarPlay itself randomly disconnects for a couple seconds at a time (although it MAY be my wire but it has yet to show any tears)

Also some other pet peeves from BEFORE iOS 10 that are still happening now with Music:

Some radio station genres found in Apple Music on iPhone/iPad/Mac are not listed in CarPlay

Anyone else w/ CarPlay suffering from these problems?

2016 Civic EX, iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 10.1 -- car purchased fresh off the truck Labor Day 2016.

No problems for me now that I've upgraded to 10.1 (un-paired and re-paired with the car after updating). Podcasts app can be a little sluggish to boot up sometimes, but recognition of the device being connected is no longer a problem, whether I have the phone locked or open, or plugging the phone in before or after the car is on -- these were the biggest troubleshooting variables that caused issues before.

I've tried just about everything to trip it up since I upgraded to 10.1, and it simply behaves like it's supposed to now. I've only had one time where it wouldn't load -- I plugged it in and immediately put it in reverse (backup cam came on, and the car had just booted up too -- so I think I gave it a little too much to think about all at once). I unplugged and plugged back in and it immediately worked then.

To contrast: Before 10.1, I can't say I ever had your problem, SCR, where the device crashed after successfully starting up. It was always a matter of whether the car felt like recognizing the connection off the bat.

Really sorry yours still isn't working. Wishing you the best. Will continue to post if I have new observations.

I was experiencing a different issue but probably my solution will work for other people. My iPhone 5s running iOS10 was constantly connecting and disconnecting from immediately it got connected to CarPlay and continuously doing this infinitely. So, I removed my iPhone setup from the VW stereo system and installed it again. That worked for several weeks and then the problem came back. So, this time I just pressed and hold the power button on my VW Stereo System and wait until the screen got black and came back on (Same logic as holding down your iphone home button and the power button until the apple logo shows up for resetting your phone). My Navigation System started loading the maps from the SD card and the radio started again. I also reset my iphone before connecting it back to the usb cable. ...Then everything start working again. 🙂

So, I guess the Radio System will needed to be re-started once in a while as many other devices.

Note: for those using iPhone 7, the home button is not a real button so for resetting the iPhone 7 you will need to press and hold a volume down button and the power button simultaneously and wait until the apple logo shows up.

I hope this works for you too.

I have been experiencing these same issues with my aftermarket Kenwood 6702s head unit. I was using an aftermarket USB cable that was much longer than the stock cable that comes with the phone. I thought it was a decent cable but to my surprise, it was the root of my problems. For some reason, I tried the standard Apple USB cable and my issues are now gone. I know this may not work for some users but if you are not using the stock Apple Lightning cable... give it a try, it fixed my issues.

I got the same XC90 2017 model with CarPlay, and it works great with 9.3 on IPhone5, and failed to do so after upgrade to 10.0.2, and I am trying out 10.1 and see if that can make it better. Going to contact Volvo dealer to see if they got upgrade on their side.

One more symptom is whenever I got bluetooth opened as the same time the phone connected through CarPlay, my phone with 10.0.2 will reboot.

I finally found the solution myself. The issue that it never recognized my iPhone with CarPlay seemed that the software in my Volvo XC90 T8 (MY2017) was set to Dutch language, while I run my iPhone on English Language settings.

After I set the iPhone to Dutch settings and connected the iPhone to the car immediately recognized the iPhone for CarPlay and it finally works as expected. Afterwards I changed the language on my phone back to English and it seems to still work fine.

So it seems that in the Volvo XC90 the iPhone and the Volvo software need to be set to the same language when they connect for the first time, otherwise it does not recognize the iPhone for CarPlay. Not sure if this is a bug in the Carplay software or Volvo's Sensus software, but at least now I finally got to work what I paid for :-)

I had the opposite ocurr, which baffled me. My stock lightening USB just stopped working, and I switched to the AmazonBasics version and worked on my Kenwood unit. Alas, it was all temporary though and it appeared that ios 10 just would not work with CarPlay. "Skipping" music, dropped connections, and completely disabled navigation were the main issues with ios 10. The release of ios 10.1 fixed the navigation partially, but the music still skips a lot, and the navigation will drop when CarPlay disconnects. Bluetooth works great as a backup though.

Followed up on the XC90 CarPlay. I refreshed to iOS 10.1, and also reduced the font size to normal and unbold the text and also put the screen back to standard mode. It works for first 2 trips, then start to crashing again.

An unverified theory is that it crashed whenever the bluetooth and CarPlay are both enabled. Maybe due to some racing conditions of two ways communicating to the car.

Try to disable the bluetooth and connect your car with your phone again and see if that fixed the issue. Have fun!

this answer may sound like a no-brainer but I had some serious issues with my 6s and connecting in my 2 cars and my iPad. Called support and they were very patient in working with me. Probably spent close to an hour with 2 different representatives until we got it fixed. They will walk you through it step by step and stay on the phone or call you back as needed. My problems are now solved. Didn't see a problem here that was exactly like mine but similar. Upgrading to 10.1.1 and rebooting everything (including unpairing and re-pairing) helped. Good luck!

This is definitely an iOS 10.1 issue. Here's what I found -

1. Everything was smooth upto iOS 10.0.2 on both my iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 Plus unless I upgraded the iPhone 7 Plus to iOS 10.1.

2. Since I was using iPhone 7 Plus with iOS 10.1 as my primary phone, I noticed the disconnection issue on my car. It says 'Car play' is connected, but the connection gets disconnected within 30 seconds. Resetting car play unit didnt help.

3. But when I connected my iPhone 6 with iOS 10.0.2 to my car, it worked flawlessly. Maps shows correctly about my cars parking location. Music, Siri, phone everything works as it was initially.

4. Now, the interesting part is - I tried to connect my iPhone 7 Plus, after removing iPhone 6 - and volia! it recognised the 7 plus. However when I turned off the car and disconnected apple car play, Apple maps didnt show my car location on 7 plus as it did on 6.

So, The bottom line of my investigation is, iOS 10.1 Apple Car play is buggy. Anyone from apple can help us? This definitely a serious problem and I hope it gets fixed on next release asap.

This problem seems to be more serious than I originally thought. It has affected connection with my iPad from my phone and with one of my 2 cars. Thought I had it fixed but one of them started acting up again. Ford Sync shows I'm connected but I can't hear audio from the other person unless I go to phone and select audio, toggle to speaker, then toggle back to Sync. These steps are not only annoying but illegal as I live in a state where hands free phone use is mandatory and I could get a ticket for looking at/using my phone while driving. Apple please fix this. Problems started after the iOS 10 downloads...:-(
