CarPlay problems after iOS 10 Update

Ever since iOS 10 my CarPlay functions have been very glitchy, mostly when I got navigation going on at the same time. Here's a few things I encounter:

  • Music freezes (can't change songs, can't tap into the app if I tap out of it, icon zooms in once it gets past freezing)
  • Siri mutes herself when reading texts (only seems to happen when I listen to a text straight from a notification
  • CarPlay itself randomly disconnects for a couple seconds at a time (although it MAY be my wire but it has yet to show any tears)

Also some other pet peeves from BEFORE iOS 10 that are still happening now with Music:

Some radio station genres found in Apple Music on iPhone/iPad/Mac are not listed in CarPlay

Anyone else w/ CarPlay suffering from these problems?

I was having an issue where upgrading my iPhone 6S+ to iOS 10 would result in no longer receiving in-dash notifications in my new 2016 Honda Civic Touring. I even had the same problem with my new iPhone 7+. I tried deleting the Bluetooth profiles in both the receiver and the iPhone, and even deleted my old Honda CarPlay profile in my iPhone settings. No luck... until I discovered a setting I had not noticed before. I went into Settings, Bluetooth, tapped the blue circular icon to the right of HandsFreeLink (or whatever CarPlay system you have), and toggled Show Notifications to the On position. For good measure I made sure to enable the Allow CarPlay While Locked setting by going into Settings, General, CarPlay, Honda. I also decided to enable the Rest Finger to Open feature in Settings, General, Accessibility, Home Button. This seems to have solved most of my problems, so far...

For my problem, at least, it was resolved after removing the phone pairing with the car, power cycling the iPhone and then pairing with the car again.

It was a really strange problem where after the update the phone caused the car entertainment system interface to go very slowly and periodically complain about lost connection (through the USB). Some functions simply did not work. I saw these exact same symptoms repeated in many forums.

After the re-pairing and power cycling everything is back to normal. I've updated iOS before without this happening. This latest update somehow scrambles current pairing, causing problems.

Yep, 2016 Honda Civic. I keep getting error that the device does not support CarPlay. I am going back to iOS 9.3.5 while I still have the chance.

+ 1 with issues with the 2016 Civic.

I rarely get the "device not supported" issue but I get the "No device connected" error constantly and typically two (2) minutes after I connect my iPhone 6+. The two minutes is VERY consistent. Tried all kinds of things to troubleshoot this, including multiple cables. Very frustrating.

A total restart of my iPhone almost always seems to fix the problem. If I restart my iPhone before I get in the car it always works. A less reliable fix is to hold the power button until "slide to power off" appears and then press the Home button until the home screen reappears.

Upgraded to 10.1 also yesterday and the problems in my 2016 Civic continue as described above. Any other Civic users having better luck with 10.1?

Frustrating for sure!

Did you un-pair and re-pair with the car after the 10.1 update? Haven't done it yet, but have 2016 Civic, so very interested.

I have not done any of the usual troubleshooting yet but I will. So, no, I have not tried the unpair / repair thing yet. We can compare notes for the next couple of days

Responding to my own message...

I un-paired and re-paired both CarPlay and Bluetooth wth my iPhone 6+ running iOS 10.1 and 2016 Civic Touring today and still have problems with CarPlay crashing about two minutes in - displaying a "No Device Connected" message. A complete reboot of my iPhone usually fixes the problem.

Other things I have tried prior to this...

  • multiple cables, including a newly purchased one from the Apple Store
  • completely erasing my iPhone and re-installing the iOS - although I have not done that with a fresh version of 10.1

So, at least for me, the CarPlay / Civic problems continue with 10.1. Frustrating!
