CarPlay problems after iOS 10 Update

Ever since iOS 10 my CarPlay functions have been very glitchy, mostly when I got navigation going on at the same time. Here's a few things I encounter:

  • Music freezes (can't change songs, can't tap into the app if I tap out of it, icon zooms in once it gets past freezing)
  • Siri mutes herself when reading texts (only seems to happen when I listen to a text straight from a notification
  • CarPlay itself randomly disconnects for a couple seconds at a time (although it MAY be my wire but it has yet to show any tears)

Also some other pet peeves from BEFORE iOS 10 that are still happening now with Music:

Some radio station genres found in Apple Music on iPhone/iPad/Mac are not listed in CarPlay

Anyone else w/ CarPlay suffering from these problems?

iPhone 6s, iOS 10

Probably my final update: it's been nearly 3 weeks now and since wiping my phone and NOT restoring from a backup everything has been rock solid. The longest I had ever gone before was about a week of stability after factory resetting the head unit and deleting all associations with it on my phone.

My assumption is shortly after getting the car and using CarPlay for the first time on a commute to work the head unit went completely nuts - black screen and taking forever to reboot. My guess is that may have corrupted something on my phone which, coupled with a bad head unit, kept triggering the dreaded "no device connected" problem.

Hopefully this helps someone else out - when it works and it's reliable it really is a decent system.

Well, amazingly - mine now works!! I'm using a 6 plus paired to Apple car play in a '17 Audi A4. I originally tried rebooting my phone, updating the car software, changing cables along with plugging & unplugging multiple times without success. I also stopped & started the car as well. Went back to the car prepared to call and speak to an Audi technologist and it immediately fired up once connected. I have absolutely no idea why, so I'm totally baffled - but glad it's working again...just wish I understood why 😕

Yep, 2016 Honda Civic. I keep getting error that the device does not support CarPlay. I am going back to iOS 9.3.5 while I still have the chance.

+ 1 with issues with the 2016 Civic.

I rarely get the "device not supported" issue but I get the "No device connected" error constantly and typically two (2) minutes after I connect my iPhone 6+. The two minutes is VERY consistent. Tried all kinds of things to troubleshoot this, including multiple cables. Very frustrating.

A total restart of my iPhone almost always seems to fix the problem. If I restart my iPhone before I get in the car it always works. A less reliable fix is to hold the power button until "slide to power off" appears and then press the Home button until the home screen reappears.

EXACTLY this. Within two minutes, I lose connection to the device and the home screen just shows 'smartphone connection' instead of 'CarPlay.' And the power button/home button is what you use to force close an app. Something is interfering with the CarPlay interface, and there's no way I'm going to reset my phone every time I get in the car. Something's definitely going on here. Cables don't make a difference (I'm even using the one that came with my 7) - something software is causing a problem. C'mon, Apple - figure it out! 🙂

2016 Civic here.

Doesn't like when the phone is plugged in before I turn on the car. Almost inevitably will say it doesn't recognize my device (iPhone 6+).

The alphabetical order of playlists thing might be most enraging. Way too many playlists to be hunting around and trying to remember what I titled something. Chronological is essential. Really hoping this is very brief.
