Thanks for reaching out via the Apple Support Communities. From your post, I see you have some questions about how the camera function within the Messages app works, and how you can save photos you take there. I love sending pictures to my friends and family, and having a copy of them for myself is great. I'd be happy to help!
When you use the camera feature within Messages, the pictures you take are not automatically saved to your Photos app. You do have the option of saving them, though--just tap on the picture after you send it, then tap the Share button in the lower left corner of the screen. From the Share menu, choose Save Image; it will download the picture into your Camera Roll or All Photos (if you use iCloud Photo Library).

The idea of selecting each photo you take and manually storing them each time is moronic. Why would iOS 10 complicate a process that was more simple in the past? I do have this question and would hope that an easy fix or setting will be incorporated that allows me to save all photos taken regardless if it is in messages or not.

So, what you're saying Lindsay is that the old iOS allowed you to conveniently save photos automatically when taking them from within iMessages. With this new iOS 10 update, Apple has removed this feature. Now users have to take extra steps to save photos? So what benefit is there to taking photos from within iMessages? Wouldn't it be easier (and guarantee that you actually save your precious photos) to just take photos using the camera, and then selecting photos from your camera roll when adding to your iMessage? I'm sorry but this just seems ridiculous.

By that argument, what's the point in having a camera button in the iMessages app if it doesn't take and save pictures? At least now, live photos are captured and sent...

Personally, I like the new set up. The only pictures I ever take from messages are things like a lot of work related pictures of fixtures to send to colleagues. Or the stove I'm looking at buying at Lowe's that I want my housemate to see. Or the new shoes I want my best friend to know about. They always cluttered up my camera roll. I think it's extremely logical, personally.

I like the way this new function doesn't automatically save the pic, from iMessage, IF you want a quick (no keep pic) to send.

I do understand the usefulness of the Autosave feature we used to have, But I think they have included this concern in the Camera option within iMessage:

If you want your iMessage pictures to be automatically saved to your iDevice Camera Roll, follow this process:

1) Click the Camera icon, within iMessage, to access the live camera and your recent photos,

2) Swipe Right to access the Camera and photo Library,

3) click Camera, (now you are in the actual Camera App, and all pics are saved from here,

4) Take your Pic, edit/touch up if you want, then save, or don't save, then click Done.

5) this picture has now been put into your iMessage text box ready to send, Send it or Delete it.

Note: This is based on iPhone 6s+ running ios 10.0.2(14a456)

I think Apple has simply added a few new options that are more efficient than using the Camera App hand over and hand back, but as you can see above, the old functionality is still there.

swipe to the right and instead of using the mini camera you can use the regular camera or photo album. If you use regular camera it saves to your photos album. That way you can choose how to take the pic depending on if you are keeping it.

This is the best suggestion by far!!!

I agree, I lost numerous good photos because of this stupid feature.

Also, the volume buttons won't work to take a picture with the iMessage inapp photo midget.

iOS 10 is so disappointing on so many points, I regret the previous version...

This totally works! If you slide over and use the actual camera app it saves the photo. but if you use the new quick style it doesnt.

You are ridiculous. They had it before and should not have taken it away.

Yeah, I feel that way about the starter crank on the fronts of cars. How dare they change that!?!

Technically, aren't all of my photos getting saved if the I have the setting "Keep Messages--Forever" turned on?

If so, why can't Apple make them show up in my Camera roll?
