Since upgrading my 5s to ios 10, my camera has stopped working.
The phone says the flash will not work until the device cools down. It isn't even hot to the touch.
The camera is completely black for both front and back cameras.
The flash will not turn on.
I have reset the phone and even did a factory reset and erased everything and it still won't work.
I have also tried opening it from the lock screen but I still have the same problem.

Interesting. Since updating to iOS10 I have a problem similar to this. I have a 6s that has never been serviced. Sometimes when opening the camera app, the view is almost totally black and seems to attempt to focus. Sometimes swiping to video and back a couple times fixes it. Restarting the phone seems to always fix it. This has only happened ~5 times since updating the iOS. Unsure if mechanical or software.

I too, have this problem. I have a 6s plus, and it immediately broke after the update to iOS 10. This is definitely a bug with this silly update which, has not only broken my camera, but my battery life, display appearance, calendar, ringtones, etc. I dislike this update very much, and wish I could go back to the previous one! So no, it is most definitely a software BUG.

II'm using iPhone 7 and have the same issue too.
I hace iPhone 6s Plus and camera works fine but video camera takes much darker videos then camera in low light.
hope Apple reads these posts and fixes IOS 10 soon with update.

Ankush, i have tried this method multiple times with no resolution. I'm not going to a retail store as my camera was working fine before. Front-facing camera still works--rear camera just gives the error message.
Hope apple quickly fix it. Cant take photos anymore 😟
I have that same issue, ever since the first iOS 10 release. It is very annoying, hopefully it gets fixed asap. Swiping to video and back to photo helps, but still...

you're one of the lucky ones. Mine still won't work. I might just have to bite the bullet and upgrade to a new phone. Or even worse...an Android.
I just received my iPhone 7 plus I ordered. The camera works flawlessly including the video! Clearly the IOS 10 was written for the new iPhone 7. Apple needs
to fix the other camera's to work correctly in IOS 10.

I Have this problem too. Regular camera is not working but front camera fine.
Just spotted a workaround while Apple sort things out.
Open the Camera app (and obviously nothing will show). Then swipe across to Slo-Mo setting.
On my handset, the camera starts working and shows the view onscreen. When I swipe back acrorss to normal camera, it lets me take pics like it used to do before iOS 10.
As of Oct 9, 2016 I am having what sounds like the identical problem.
I have an iPhone 6- it's actually a "new" phone from Apple (previous GPS hardware issue- replaced via Apple Care).
Updated to iOS10.0.2 (14A456).
Problem started yesterday just randomly- noted that at first camera took a bit of time to turn on, then took out of focus pics. I also initially noted that swiping to video or slo-mo activated the camera but as of today that is not working for me.
In addition, I intermittently get the yellow caution symbol at the "flash" site stating that the Flash is Disabled- Camera needs to cool down.
I have forced closed camera app, turned off/on the phone, and done the soft reset- haven't done the factory reset yet. Would rather not since others have not found it helpful and seems like a time-waster.
I have not dropped/traumatized the phone.
The front-facing camera is fine.
Looking forward to hearing about any solutions from users or Apple. I likely will be heading into a friendly neighbourhood Apple store later this week though.
