iPhone7 Bluetooth issue in the car

My brand new Iphone7 seems to have bluetooth problems in my car. Everything works but the sound drops sometimes (often) when I listen to music. I didnt have this issue wiyh my 6s and IOS10. I tried to reset everything but the problem persists. The iPhone is recognized by the radio inmy Toyota, but the sound drops just as it was a radio in a tunnel.

I provided this to the techs weeks ago, but it seems like there was no headway. So here are the results of my trials for everyone to read:

I work in an environment where I have access to soundproof rooms. The walls are steel with padding and are about 6" thick (solid). These are "dead spots" for wireless in my building, which I surveyed and had to plan around because of the walls. I also work with deploying a lot of iOS devices, so most of my colleagues have an iPhone.

Testing environment:

I tested the area with an OptiView XG using AirMagnet Spectrum XT software. This device and software is used to measure the amount of Radio Frequency (RF) radiation in a given area to troubleshoot issues with wireless, and to help design wireless networks for large corporations. This helped me to ensure that there were no stray 2.4GHz interferers while testing, meaning that the only devices emitting 2.4GHz band RF were the "Devices" listed below (Beats Pill, Plantronics Backbeats, Braven BRV-1) and the phones.

Additionally, I tested the cars listed below in several environments with and without interferers nearby. These were less controlled, however mirrored the exact same results.

Stuttering/Skipping:

To show an example of the skipping sound that I am referring to, please take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGHFDRVA958

Bluetooth devices tested:

  • Cars: 2013 Ford Focus, 2011 Toyota Venza, 2007 BMW 335i, 2006 VW Jetta
  • Devices: Beats Pill, Plantronics Backbeats, Braven BRV-1

iPhones tested:

  • iPhone 6s - No problems
  • iPhone 6s Plus - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (T-Mobile, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Sprint, A1661) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 (Verizon, A1660) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon, A1661) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon, A1661) - No problems
  • There were two other GSM iPhone 7 Pluses that I trialed, but I don't have the model numbers in front of me to list to provide exact details. Both had issues.

As you can see, the issues are localized to the GSM models using the new Intel modems. This further solidifies the belief that there is an existing hardware issue and not a problem with software, interference, or other manufacturer's devices. I'm not sure what else I can do to troubleshoot with the Apple reps, but after spending upwards of $5000 with Apple in 2016, I can't help but to feel neglected.

I think it is a hardware issue that might not have a solution.

Unfortunately Apple doesn't step forward and take responsibility for its mistakes unless it gets sued these days.

I think if Google had a more secure backdoor I would consider switching. The only thing I can really do is not buy its other products like the watch or headphones.

I can stream Bluetooth audio to my 2015 BMW but have issues with calls. My 6s was much more reliable for me on AT&T but I hated the camera in low light. Made all my pictures yellow.

The one thing I find funny is that it is hard to getting any vlogger to talk about the Bluetooth issues. Apple really has the media trained well.

I'm just letting you know that non-essential applications likely are not the issue.

There are four states for a running application:

  • Active (running in foreground, executing code)
  • Inactive (running in foreground, not executing code),
  • Background (Executing code in the background for a brief period of time before being forced into a Suspended state)
  • Suspended (In the background, but not able to execute code)

This means that during a Suspended state (which occurs just after a few minutes), the application isn't using system resources and wouldn't be affecting your streaming quality. Whatever advantages you notice are likely just a placebo effect.

Dec. 14 Lunch Test #1:

  • 15-minute drive to lunch.
  • Streamed a podcast with the Podcasts app.
  • Only apps running were Podcasts, Phone, Reminders and Evernote.
  • Not a single stutter or drop.

Dec. 14 Lunch Test #2:

  • 15-minute drive back to the office.
  • Continued the same podcast stream with Podcasts app.
  • Torture test — turned on Slack, Mail, Facebook, Inbox, Music, Safari, Google Maps, Messages, Notes, App Store, Calendar, Camera and Photos app, in addition to previously listed apps.
  • Immediate stuttering when I switched between Podcasts, Slack and Google Maps apps while I was leaving parking lot.
  • No issues during the majority of my drive.
  • Minor stuttering when I got close to the office.
  • In total, there was stuttering and drops, but less than it has been the last few days.

Has anyone else noticed that the stuttering only occurs when there is a LTE signal of 4 bars or more? In my tests, I always check the LTE signal when stuttering occurs and it is always when there is signal of 4 or more bars on LTE. I know exactly where a tower is and as I drive towards it will start, get worse when I'm right next to the tower, and then decrease as I travel away and signal gets weaker. At 3 bars LTE the stuttering does not occur.

this is ridiculous... iPhone 7 Plus on Verizon network purchased November 4. Car is Infiniti G37. Same problem with bluetooth audio stuttering and cutting in and out. At this point, it must be considered a manufacturer defect. I'm going into the Apple Store and going to demand that they give me a regular iPhone 7 to use until the issue is resolved. The bluetooth audio issue materially affects a users ability to use the phone for its intended and usual purpose.

Today is day 86 of my open case with Apple.

I last spoke with a tech on November 5th, and last sent an email to the tech(s) who are assigned my case on December 2nd (13 days ago) which nobody ever responded to.

I am past my return date, exchanging the phone doesn't fix anything, and I'm stuck with something broken. I'm legitimately upset about this.

Yep, I think that most of us are in the same situation. Keep us updated regarding your case with Apple. I'm hoping they at least get back to you and acknowledge the issue.

I've had an iPhone since the 3G and this is the most dissatisfied I've ever been with one of their products. I've always considered Android to be highly inferior to Apple's products, but if I was able to return my iPhone 7 Plus, I'd be running to a Pixel XL right now.
