iPhone 7 GPS constantly changing in Maps

Is anyone having issues with GPS on the iPhone 7? In Maps, my "location" (i.e., blue dot) is jumping all around my current location. It doesn't seem to be getting a lock on my actual GPS location. I have noticed that it also affects other apps that use GPS.

Thanks for sharing your model numbers John. (And thanks for correcting me on the Intel / Broadcom chip combination).

So far I thought I heard only replacement units with model number A1661 had an actually working GPS unit.

(More people have similar problems as discussed here: http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/gps-problems-iphone-7-or-ios10.1998933/)

It's good to know your new A1784 does indeed work correctly after swapping it from an A1784.

Solution for others in that case might be trial-and-error swapping until you hopefully hit an iPhone with a properly functioning GPS chip...

I've wondered if it it might be an accelerometer issue rather than a gps issue.

Btw there's one guy over at the MacRumors forum discussion on this topic who says that he got a replacement phone that works as good as 6 or SE. And he's using Runtastic just like you:

So now I wonder if the error is not universal after all, so maybe I should ask for yet another (a third) replacement phone. My iPhone 7 is a brick to me anyway, so if they accept a return again, it won't matter if I have to wait a few days for a replacement.

This is a pretty long thread, but there are plenty of people, myself included, who had their defective phones replaced with new phones that work perfectly.

If your phone is replaced with a new phone but still exhibits the same problem, just keep sending it back. I've found it's easiest if you make a video of your GPS bouncing around by miles or something.

The thing is, my phone doesn't bounce around by miles, the GPS isn't that bad. It's just that it's not precise enough for tracking sports, it gives me (with every app I've tried) runs that are overestimated by at least 10%, sometimes up to 50%, with wiggly tracks that veer off the street I walk on, while my iPhone 6 mostly locates me even on the right side of even a narrow street.

Since you're satisfied with your replacement phone, do you use it for running or just ordinary GPS use with e.g. Apple's Maps app?

Here's the difference as illustrated by a walk I recorded simultanously on my iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 (I don't think I have to tell you which is which :-)):

I persevered for 6 exchanges. 7 phones in total, yes seven - which was getting a bit ridiculous and taking too much of my time too. Every unit demonstrated the same random errors, ie. unusable position services data (jumping around in Maps/Gogle Maps and jagged zig-zag positioning in sports apps, eg. Strava, Endomondo, etc, etc).

Cycle rides 10-15% longer for the obvious reason:

Everyone has their limit with patience and frustration, and I'd exceeded mine - plus, despite technical demonstrations of the faults, the manager at my local Apple Store was starting to get a bit of an attitude frankly... so I walked away with my refund and am back to using my old faithful iPhone 4 for now until such time there appears a confirmed fix.
