iPad Pro Keyboard "This accessory is not supported by this device"

128GB, 12.9" iPad Pro running iOS 10.1 (problem occurred with previous iOS too).

Smart Keyboard all of a sudden doesn't work. Error message "This accessory is not supported by this device".

Have cleaned contacts, rebooted, hard rebooted, and upgraded to the OS to iOS 10.1. No change.

It has randomly worked a few times, but seems random. One day couldn't type a web address in Safari, next day I could. Hasn't work a few days in a row now.

Thoughts?

Update 2 - I write this update on my new iPad Pro Smart Keyboard having had it replaced at the Apple Store. Took the replacement out of the box and connected it and instantly worked. To me, this suggests the issue is with the Smart Keyboard.

If there is any change here, I will update.

It's definitley a software based problem. It has also gotten worse, not better throughout the 10.1 beta and "official" release. For all the apple products I have spent money on since my first Mac in 1999 or 2000 (17" PowerBook), i can't help but feel like their priority is getting me, especially as an early adopter of all their products (more than I care to admit to here) to drop thousands on another MacBook Pro. I very well may but not until this problem is fixed.

I Have the same problem. The keypad, which has worked perfectly for 6 months suddenly stopped working - same error message. I cleaned the terminals and it worked for a while - except the 'delete' button would get stuck/go crazy and delete lines and lines of text. Then the keypad stopped working completely. I've closed down and re booted iPad several times, fiddled with a bunch of stuff in settings, and cleaned terminals - it just ain't working.

Youre saying its a software issue - hurry up and fix it Apple...

BTW - there is NOTHING that I like about the upgrade OS: really dislike the new email interface, predictive typing has gone stupid, iPhone keeps freezing, now this. Give me the old OS back please...!

I have a similar problem, the error messages keep flowing in every few minutes, blocking what I do. Mostly they pop up when the keyboard is folded back. In the majority of cases, though, the keyboard keeps working (just had the message a couple of times before typing this). Occeasionally the keyboard stops working but is operational again after a warm start (home button + on/off switch long press).

The frequency of error messages seems to creep up, it is getting quite annoying meanwhile. It is awfully quiet from Apples side about what is a serious flaw that is killing productivity and fun.

Update - Worked great for several hours and the alert just popped up again this morning. I think I went 8-12 hours without seeing the alert and usually get the it every 10-20 minutes. My iPad was running out of power and the alert appeared as I was under 5%. I am going to try rubbing the magnet on the tongue with the 3 connecters. I also noticed that the middle connecter on the Keyboard is ever so slightly recessed. Someone else posted something about that. Not sure if its related. I'll post an update as I progress.

I would take it back if under warranty. Problem only gets worse...mine is almost unusable. I’ve cleaned, wiggled contacts, etc. but the only thing that sometimes works is to restart it (holding home and power buttons)...but having to do that multiple times a day now. Even though I’ve only had it for just over a year, my warranty was out...but I didn’t buy it from Apple. And they wouldn’t exchange it.

Mar. 21 update to my Feb. 18, 2019 post. My magnetic flux seems to have escaped as cold dark matter once again. My keyboard worked fine for a little while, after the magnet trick. Now it is back to its old tempermental self. The magnet trick won’t improve it anymore and I have digressed to disconnect, connect, disconnect, tilt the screen up, tilt the screen down, slide the screen side to side in the gutter, etc. etc. Eventually it will “connect” and start working. I feel like Clark Griswold trying to plug in my display of exterior illumination. I guess I will go to the Apple Store and see if they can do anything. I’ve had this one since the 12.9” pro was released, 2015 I think. Definitely over any 3 year extension Apple may have done on this. I don’t really have anything to lose at this point.

This definitely works! If it doesn't for you, you may not be using a strong enough magnet, or not 'stroking' it enough (HAH). I will add that in my case (pun intended) carrying my iPhone in the same case as my iPad and smart keyboard may have caused the problem, since my iPhone case (Rokform) has a magnet in it, and it may have weakened the magnetic switch in the keyboard..

This is really irritating. If nothing else I would like to use the keyboard just to protect the glass end of the ipad pro but I can't even do that because of the accessory not supported message. Apple support told me if I want to the lastest ios release on the ipad 10.14.6 it would fix the problem but it didn't. The new release is slightly better but I still get a ton of accessory not supported messages. Just to poke at a solution. Some people say the keyboard has a MFi connection even though it physically connects. I have hearing aids that I think use MFi. Is it possible some combination of MFi devices is causing the problems?
