Command + click to open link to new tab won't work (Sierra)

I'm not sure if I did something to mouse pad setting, command key + mouse left won't work to open link to a new tab. Anyone know how to fix this? Not sure if this is Sierra related problem but it worked before I updated to Sierra.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12)

Hi Kappy,

I will explain my problem here again. I usually use command key + mouse left click to open a link to a new tab in Safari, Chrome, Firefox..etc. However, ever since I updated to Sierra I am not able to do that. However, when I holding down the command key and left click the link opens to a new tab. But in El Capitan and all other previous OS X, It used to work like this, just tab a command key (without holding it) and left click to open a link to a new tab in any internet browser.

It has always been that way. You must hold down the COMMAND key while clicking the mouse. It is not a key sequence but a set of keys together (or in this case, a key and a mouse click. Perhaps, you have some other settings like a longer delay or key repeat that may have coincidentally produced the results you observed. I don't really know. But I cannot reproduce what you described on my system with Sierra. Unfortunately, I don't have another computer here running El Capitan on which to test it. I only have my personal recollections from all the past OS X versions I have used.

So, I can't provide you with a solution, per se.

So I've had this problem ever since installing Sierra, it appears to only be a problem with native OSX apps, it's only with the external keyboard attached via USB to my macbook pro.

Macbook Pro keyboard with mouse:

If I command-click works as expected, opening a new tab with the link. (Expected behavior)

Using the external USB Keyboard (in this case a Corsair Strafe RGB) with mouse :

  • VMWare Fusion and Win 10 with Firefox... it works.
  • If I command-click in any web browser running directly on top of OSX link loads in current tab
  • As a modifier using the keyboard it works, command-C copies, command-V pastes

It's rather annoying, almost as though it was purposefully disabled to force me to move to an apple keyboard

I have the same setting as you are showing me in your post. When I tries to open hyperlink in a new tab I usually press command key once (not keep pressing the key) and click the link. However, after the update, now I have to keep pressed the command key and click the link in order to open a link in a new tab which is annoying. If you updated to Sierra, can you try to open a link in a new tab by just press the command key once and click the hyperlink? If it worked can you show me your Accessibility setting for mouse and keyboard?

No, I've been using this Sticky Key function for at least 10 years.

However, I just tested out on my Mac mini and this feature is gone in Sierra. One click Sticky Key is still working for copying and pasting (without holding down Command (⌘) Key + c or v) and maybe some other shortcut. I updated my MacBook Pro yesterday and I thought some of the keyboard settings were changed, but now my updated Mac mini also doesn't work. Just to make sure, I also tested out on my old MacBook, running 10.6.8, and yet it works like a charm.

Opening a link in a new tab with just a click of Command (⌘) Key + left click on a mouse (without holding down the Command (⌘) Key) was one of my favorite feature for Sticky Key but it is GONE in Sierra. Apple needs to bring this function back. I do not want to hold down the Command Key!

Anyway Kappy, thank you for trying to solve this problem.

Well I had the same problem as you and I found what causes this problem for me..

When I installed Sierra it worked good, then I attached apple keyboard on my macbookpro - then it worked good too, but when I was traveling I forgot keyboard at home and like I cant use CMD+Click function anywhere.. Even some simple OS X function to close running app Shift + Right mouse click - not worked for me.
SO I found your thread here and when I come home and attached my keyboard again so it started to work again normal on my external keyboard, so in my case the problem was relaited with keyboard.

norko55,

I don't use any wireless nor wired keyboard with my MacBook Pro. Like I said in previous post, command+c to copy, v to paste, command+a to select all .. etc, works fine. Just like you said, command+q to quit running app works fine (I do not know why you would use shift+right click to quit the app tho). Only thing that doesn't work is command + click a link to open in a new tab.
