Copy/Paste broken in MacOS Sierra

I upgraded to MacOS Sierra yesterday, and since then I cannot copy paste across apps.

For eg. copying text from chrome allows me to paste it in chrome, but pastes nothing on safari or my text editor.

This probably has something to do with Universal Copy/Paste ? How can I disable it? Can't do any productive work without copy/paste

So here is my current understanding of the cause of this and a solution that is little bit better than what has been proposed here by others.

There is are two system processes

/usr/libexec/pboard

/System/Library/CoreServices/pbs

Looks like these processes are responsible for holding and maintaining the paste buffer ( OS X name for the clipboard). These processes also maintain a system socket that other application talk to, that's how they can exchange the cut and paste material

There was a change introduced in the past few month that causes this processes to to fail and quit sometimes. They may or may not get automatically restarted by the OS X. But even when they do get restarted,

But even after the process is restarted the other applications are still trying to talk to the old socket. For which nobody is listening to.

So my solution is to check if these processing are running, if not restart them. And then restart the applications for which the Cut and Paste is broken.

This is not ideal solution, it's pain to restart Google Chrome and PyCharm with dozens of tabs and windows open, but that's bit better than restarting everything

Agreed! I am still having this problem. Started right after upgrade. Has nothing to do with other software. This is an apple problem. Restarting fixes it but then it starts again right away.

Safe Mode is not an option for normal work. This is significantly interrupting my ability to do work!

Someone below suggests installing Microsoft Remote Desktop but I have never used that and see now reason why that would be relevant.

If this were widespread, there would be a huge outcry.

Most people have no problem with copy and paste.

So rather than expect Apple to fix a problem that is not in the OS, you should try and figure out what is different in your system that makes this fail.

Of course Safe Mode is not an option for normal work! Noone is suggesting you use safe mode permanently.

It serves two purposes:

1) Check that copy and paste work as they should in safe mode, implying that something else, that is not loaded in safe mode, may be involved;

2) Clear system caches, which is done when booting in safe mode; sometimes a corrupt system cache is the cause, and just restarting in safe mode and again restarting normally fixes problems.

I have this issue. Everything is fine for a while, then when I paste, it just pastes the first character. Very frustrating. Reading through this thread it is clearly the OS and not some specific app, as have seen this between various different all apple apps. Restarting machine fixes it for an hour or so.

I too had problems with copy and paste in sierra. Finally I deactivated the third party application "copy paste pro" and voila everything works fine. So it's very likely that the problem is not Apples fault but an incompatable application. Try to disable all foreign processes in the background! Don't forget to look into System Preferences ---> Users & Groups

---> Login Items. Good luck!

I have similar issues with copying/pasting since installing Sierra, however the bug isn't affecting all apps for me.

NOTE: This bug is also present in Safe Mode!

Here are further details for my specific situation;

  • Only present upon installing Sierra (currently running version 10.12.1)
  • Only relates to copying tables from Numbers to Pages (tables paste fine in other apps)
  • Copying of actual text (ie. rather than a table) from Numbers to Pages doesn't work either. However copying text from an individual cell in Numbers to an individual cell in a Pages table works perfectly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Luis... it seems your question has led us to the answer.

I'd thought that the OS and apps were all the most recent versions, however I found out this wasn't the case for Pages. There have been no recent notifications in my App Store to update Pages (as there were for Numbers & Keynote) which means that I was running an old version.

As I couldn't update the regular way, I navigated to Pages in the App store, downloaded the missing update and this bug is now fixed.

Thanks!
