during an update, my phone crashed and now has support.apple.com/iPhone/restore on the screen along with the iTunes symbol. After updating my iTunes on my computer it suggests updating my iPhone which I do, but then does nothing
Try If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.
Or try DFU recovery: https://www.payetteforward.com/how-to-put-iphone-dfu-mode/.
Or try restoring on a different computer if you can.
Failing that perhaps a visit to an Apple Store Genius Bar.
