Another Saturday in the office and I would like to watch college sports using Apple OS Sierra's much publicized PIP feature. Still does not work with ESPN, nor even the college live streams.
What am I or Apple doing wrong? Been a few months and still cannot get PIP to work.
Yes, I have the PIP icon in my Safari menu bar.
Just upgraded to Sierra last night and it would be nice if WATCH ESPN videos in Safari would work with the native Sierra PiP feature, but after reading this thread and trying everything possible I don't believe it works.
I had no problem getting the native ESPN PiP feature to work (which is what at last one of the screenshots above was), but that's not what we're trying to do. As you noted it's easy to get PiP to work with YouTube and other sites, just not ESPN.
Oh well, my guess is until ESPN changes from Flash it ain't ever going to work, which *****. So until something changes or some mystery settings is found, I guess we just drag and manually resize their video window to the best spot on our screen. Also, going to keep an eye on this one just in case someone has a real solution that works.
Thx DB, love your dedication to Apple.
If my TV offers PIP and it does not work I go back to the maker of the TV, "not" CBS, ESPN, etc.
Apple offers and promotes the PIP feature and "no" CBS, ESPN, etc.
Sierra's PIP feature has been promoted since October and still not working for most stations and streams.

As I've mentioned several times before, PIP only works with HTML5. Some sites are still hanging on to Adobe Flash for their content. At some point if they don't change nothing will be working on their sites. Mozilla has already announced they will no longer support Flash in the near future.
It has nothing to do with "dedication to Apple".
I'm not sure how many more times it needs to be explained that PIP requires HTML5. Many sites have already switche over to it but not all.
Yes. Although they don't have the proper PiP icon in the corner of their player, it is still possible.
While the video is playing, right click on the video and it will show a contextual menu with "Player Information". If you left click on that, it will stop the video and show stats about the video stream. Not what you want.
Instead of left clicking on "Player Information" entry, right click on it and you will get the regular Safari contextual menu. Here is where you will find the Picture in Picture option.
🙂
Thank You Smudge,
Having some trouble, figuring out how to right and left click from my laptop.
I am very disappointed that Apple promoted the PIP feature of OS Sierra, but so far I cannot easily figure out how to do this.
Would be a great feature for watching college football games.
Try disabling the ClickToFlash extension.
Also, it only works in Safari.
Thx Smudge,
How do you "disable the ClickToFlash extension"
This PIP feature is a HUGE let-down trying to get it to work
FWIW, I'm not Smudge. If it's installed it would be in Safari preferences under extensions.
oops sorry bout that. and thx for the update on the ClicktoFlash extension. I do not see it in Safari>Preferences>extensions
Yes, I know PIP is suppose to work only in Safari, but so far I cannot get it to work anywhere except YouTube.
Big Time of the year for sports, and I would enjoy the PIP feature to watch sports.
I think the problem is that the site you are eatching still uses flash. Any "normal" html5 video in Safari allows PinP - and that includes youtube and vimeo, for example. The battle to get rid of flash continues...
