iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

I didn't get back to my previous post quickly enough after getting off the phone with Senior AC specialist. So this is the plan of action, go into my local apple store tomorrow and get a new iphone 7 plus.......................................

I will keep you all updated if a new 7 plus from a newer batch has a hardware difference sufficient enough to remedy this audio issue.

Ok, so today was a waste of 2 hours. Costed me quite a bit in lost time. Went to the apple store to get replacement as Nicole, the senior tech, said she put in the notes. I get there and he found no notes to replace phone and ran tests, which I was told I did not have to go through again, but I did. He found no problems and would not replace my phone because he found no problem. So I called nicole back, after I left, and she is getting me some kind of rush replacement authority and will call me back within 24 hours. The gentleman at the store lied to me when he said he called nicole to verify replacement, nicole had no record of him calling. This is the NEW post Jobs apple I guess. I'm not impressed at all. So, I don't know who's telling the truth anymore, my trust in apple has been stripped from me today. I'm not sure a new phone will even fix the problem, it hasn't for most everyone except one guy who said it the new replacement phone was working good so far........................ Don't know what to do. Can I force tmobile to give me a refund, anyone know how? Or to get them to let me try a Samsung 8? I do need a properly working phone..

Hi ttttttaaas,

‘We’ are all quite disappointed. Because it’s ridiculous.

My road for having this fixed is lasting already for 10 months.

My senior AppleCare guy told me today that in 2 months we will be in touch for a year.

That’s ridiculous.

And before I was connected to him I visted the Apple Genius Bar in Amsterdam 2 times. But they can take the “Genius” out of that name. Just call it the device replacement or the hard format bar. That’s all the solutions they came up with and none was effective.

Also with my iPhone 7, my replaced iPhone 7 and the granted by Apple iPhone 7+ as a thank you for all the effort to get it solved ... everytime all the tests work fine. That’s what’s frustrating about this. The phone not in use by a user, functions perfectly according all tests. But it’s the phone while being used, where it’s malfunctioning. And Apple then blames the user ... and is apparently unable to approach it from the angle of a faulty design of (some of) the internals of the iPhone.

We all know that by now.

My senior AppleCare guy confirms that there are many more who have this problem.

Today he asked me to try the noise cancellation thing in iOS11, but he confirmed afterwards it did not solve the problem either.

The problem with phone replacements is that they can be perfectly similar faulty phones, just refurbished ‘Apple style’. Phones that have been turned in - and after similar diagnostics like you had today - it appears to Apple that the device is perfectly fine, and then the ‘faulty’ configuration that seems to be fine will be just as well re-used. Because there’s no reason not to. From that perspective understandable, but as such we end up by a faulty iPhone 7’s circulation, or iPhone 7 plus’s for that matter that has the same problem.

One more month and then I consider to exchange my iPhone 7 plus 256 GB for the iPhone X 256 GB. And fingers crossed that that X iPhone is ok for making amazing clear steady phone calls. Hallelujah!

By the way, my friend has Samsung S8+. He has received already his 3rd new one, from Samsung as it appeared not to be that perfectly water tight (so he said). Though I must agree that’s not as bad as not able to make steady phone calls ... as you just should keep yourself from swimming with your phone. Fair enough.

My ‘problem’ is that Apple has currently a ‘vendor lock-in’ at my place as all is Apple at my place as it does all beautifully interact. Otherwise I could have maybe changed to another phone brand by now.

Thank you for that. I'm coming from a note 4. It actually took slightly better photo's than this 7 plus. That REALLY surprised and disappointed me. But the low light capabilities of the 7 plus made it better suited for me so I decided to keep it. I do really miss the 16mega pixel camera though. I'm quite certain that the galaxy s8 camera is going to be even better than the note 4's. I never really had a problem with the note 4 I just wanted to try something else. I would now go back to the note 4 if I could, but I can't. Sold it. Matter of fact, if I would have kept it I would have already handed this 7 plus back to the counter guy after getting their names with a manager present telling them, "sorry, I can't use this phone, the 7 plus. Nobody is solving the problem so I have no choice but to give it back to you, whether you want it or agree to take it or not. I've taken my sim card out and put it back into my note 4. I wish to remain your customer, but not with this phone. Sorry, I don't know what else to do, I've been abandoned with a non working phone." lol😠

Hey guys did we establish which version of iphone 7 plus this is happening? The one I have is the jet black 128gb version. I just bought the wife the projekt red 256gb iphone 7 plus and it works and sounds flawless. Perhaps we need to return the jet black versions and grab another color? Maybe we can narrow this down? The latest ios has failed in making the phone sound like its actually above water.

Like many here, I’ve gone through 3 iPhone 7’s, and tried absolutely everything to no avail. It can really only be a hardware issue, whether apple will recognize it or not.

I finally gave up, and paid for a 6s out of my own pocket, which I’ve been using for over half a year and it has functioned perfectly all along.

I’d be interested to learn whether the outgoing sound issue has finally been fixed in the iPhone 8 and/or X. Anyone?

Oct 3, 2017 1:23 PM in response to htirevold

The bottom line for me is that the issue does not exist as far as getting help from apple. I've been to the store, I've been on the phone several times. This is something we will have to deal with on our own. It is not a widespread problem enough so for apple to fix it or work on a fix for it.

So, for all of us here having the issue, use speakerphone, headphones or bluetooth. As far as apple is concerned.

I've had tmobile make an exception for me and I'm being issued a Note 8.

Well, you are not the only one, there are thousands of us and probably a lot more. I can picture Jobs turning over in his grave. Or coming back to life and firing a bunch of people for not dealing with this problem. The attention to detail and perfection is RIP, a memory. You know what blew me away? Can you believe they came out with another phone with glass on both sides again?! OMG!

Buy a bluetooth headset like I did. Looks like apple is forcing us into newer technologies, kind of like when they dropped the 3.5mm headset jack. Probably in a year or two there will not be microphones on iphones. You will no longer need to hold the phone to your face and have a conversation. You'll have to use the supplied headphone adapter or buy the ear pods. So, let's just get up to date with the technology and these issues we have will no longer be a problem. At least there is a way out.

I cannot understand the attitude of this Apple organisation when so many customers support them by continuing to buy each new iPhone that comes out, it seems they want to aggravate its customers rather than putting things right. Why not recall all these phones and supply new ones. I purchased a new IPhone 7 Plus beginning of March 2017 and have suffered microphone cut out since day 1. I have made numerous calls and went to the flagship store in London to the Genius Bar.

Genius be blowed the young man was very pleasant and did a diagnostics test and said no problem, did a reset, still the same, what happens is my voice fades and cuts out then pops back, I now have spoken to someone on apple who has confirmed at last that this is happening. I now have another appointment at Regent St in London with another Genious. I am thinking to myself is this real. If they don’t replace my phone I think Apple need to be exposed on a consumer programme on TV. I cannot get over their arrogance in this matter. I will not accept this lying down, how about all the disgruntled customers meet up for a confrontation, I am law abiding but can’t Apple see there are limits that they can push people to.There clearly are problems why not admit it.

Not sure exchanging the phone will make any difference iv had 2 swops still they same think

They are hoping the problem is solved on 8

And everyone will pay a high price to up grade

If Apple's so called diagnostic test isn't detecting a problem, then there is still a high probability that you will still have the same problem after they swap out your phones. If they would swap these defective phones with truly "new" phones than I would try it again. But, all you are getting with a phone swap is a "refurbished" phone which means a returned phone that has passed the diagnostics tests and received a new case, but has the same internals. I have done all the phone updates, multiple resets and all the other tests imaginable that Verizon and Apple could come up with including a phone swap and I still have the same problem on two IPhone 7's. At least for me, the tape over the rear microphone does the trick. I love it when people ask why I have a piece of tape on the back of my phone and I get to explain the problem to them. I know that I have turned a lot of people away from Apple and will continue to do so unless they fix my problem. This is the true definition of "putting lipstick on a pig".
