iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

You know what else, I have high blood pressure and just had to take another nitro. THIS ISSUE is really starting to affect my health. Maybe we should just wait until I or someone else has a heart attack or something. That would look great on prime time news. " Frustrated Apple user has heart attack trying to get help for a widespread iphone 7 plus problem." News at 6!!

This isn't going well as expected. He insisted that I am on beta software which I am not. I am on the exact same release number that will be coming out on the 19th. So, he wants me to do a phone restore which I'm not going to do. I'm just going to go back to tmob and leave this phone with them.

OVER AND OUT - GOODBYE🙂

P.S. I really feel sorry for you apple people and the hoops you have to jump through to get nothing done. I will not be back ever as an apple customer.

Sep 15, 2017 5:13 PM in response to ttttttaaas

If it has not been released to the public it is still beta software. It is possible it will have changes prior to Tuesday's release and you had to sign up for the Public Beta to even get it. Good riddance to you and good luck with whatever equipment you purchase. Hopefully it will be perfect and will never have a problem.

Sep 15, 2017 7:18 PM in response to ttttttaaas

Yes, it doesn't matter what number he build is until it is released to the public by Apple it is still a beta and the AppleCare people have no information or tools to work with it. They cannot check your iPhone remotely to do diagnostics which a Tier 2 person would want to do. This is why they asked you to roll back. And you are making a lot of assumptions.

Yes, good riddance. I really don't care what phone you buy so long as it is not Apple so you will deal with a forum somewhere else.

Sep 15, 2017 7:26 PM in response to deggie

Well now because of you I've decided to keep my iphone 7 plus. Now I'm not going anywhere. Mark my words. The build number will not change nor will any update be done to my iphone. I don't make assumptions!! You can keep protecting apple from the inevitable but eventually this problem WILL BE fixed.

So, here I stand, directly behind you, waiting to reply to your responses. What do you have next??

Sep 15, 2017 7:34 PM in response to ttttttaaas

Okay, in that case I would suggest you wait until next week after iOS 11 is officially released and then call AppleCare and ask to speak to a senior specialist. Just be aware they are really busy following the release of a major update and since 32 bit apps will not work in iOS 11 it may be a bit busier than usual. And try to be a reasonably decent human being and not a toxic person. If you can.

Sep 15, 2017 7:43 PM in response to deggie

Now TOXIC?! Wow, you certainly didn't let us down. Thanks for that, I guess. I already know what I have to do. That should be far more than incredibly and painfully obvious. But thanks for walking me through it again. Brilliant!

Please excuse some of us here who have $700+ phones that do not function properly. We will try to get out of your hair as soon as possible....So you can get back to whatever it is you do here.....

Utter disbelief.......

Hi ttttttaaas, please relax a bit. Hope that after a good night sleep you feel better.

Wait till monday, do this full restore thing as AppleCare suggested - I plan to do so - and if it's then still not correct or fixed, I suggest to go full force on this as I know you want to. When not fixed I will be in touch with my appointed AppleCare guy asap.

@deggie, please keep it polite and respectful here and don't trigger people's frustrations unnecessarily. We are all Apple enthusiasts here, but there is really something faulty with the iPhone 7 and 7 plus devices for quite some users, and for quite some time now. It's absolutely frustrating when a 2016-launched premium phone is not doing it's basic functionality 100% correct when there are much simpler phones and like 4-5 years old or more, out there that have zero issues with this basic functionality of having proper conversations during phone calls. AppleCare has confirmed to me many months ago - read my posts here if you like - there's something faulty. Only the fix takes a long time. And everybody deals differently with that. But please keep it polite and respectful. Thank you.

Very well stated mr.aam I have also been dealing with this problem with 2 IPhone 7's since last year. Apple has replaced 1 of my phones, and after multiple restore's on my phones, I am still dealing with this problem on both of them. The fix for me is the tape on the back microphone which is a complete joke, but does work. This is certainly not good advertising for Apple and not what I expect for very expensive phones.

Sep 17, 2017 1:10 PM in response to caprock

For me, that fix does not alleviate the problem of the same issue wherein people on the other end of the conversation, on the iphone 7 plus reporting to me, during the call, of not being able to hear me correctly. Because of this issue I have had people either, hang up on me, due to them not hearing my voice sufficiently, tell me that my voice is breaking up, tell me that I sound like I am under water etc....

To be clear, affixing an adhesive material over the tiny microphone located on the back of the camera is not even remotely an acceptable fix for this issue even if it does seem to work at time, under certain conditions. Which for me does not at all address the issue. Sorry

Sep 17, 2017 1:39 PM in response to ttttttaaas

Similar complaints to what I was receiving. Never a problem on my end, but the people on the other end would tell me that they couldn't hear me, to speak up, I sounded distorted, muffled, etc., and was often told that it sounded like I was in a tunnel. I noticed this same thing when I would call my wife from her end (we both have IPhone 7's) It didn't matter if I called them, or they called me. Not sure about the 7+, but the microphone that I am talking about is behind a very small hole which is located between the rear camera lens and flash. A small piece of tape over this corrects the sound problem, but it is a BS fix for a high dollar phone.

Dear ttttttaaas,

Bad news.

I have done a full restore of my iPhone 7 Plus, not using any back-ups, just the iOS11 only. Even turned the phone off and on after activation.

The mic-cutting-out problem is still there.

Actually my senior AppleCare guy was super interested yesterday and today to find out, and in the afternoon he reached out to me if I installed the iOS11 already. If so he wanted to test it with me to find out if the problem was solved. This evening (The Netherlands) we were able to do as such and after the test between him and me, I could hear in his voice that he was seriously disappointed when he had to conclude that the problem was still there.

He happened to receive half an hour before from Apple Engineering an email, to ask if the iOS11 had fixed the mic-cutting-out problem that we have been addressing to them for quite a long time now. My senior AppleCare guy will inform that it's not the case, that the problem is still the same. So Apple Engineering is already informed that there's no improvement to this issue with iOS11.

We are all quite disappointed.

My AppleCare guy will keep me in the loop regarding next steps or when new information is received from engineering.

May I encourage you and others to keep reaching out to AppleCare by phone. And address this problem.

I am seriously disappointed. Was really hoping for a solution by now. Many many months I've spent on this problem with my senior AppleCare guy. I should not loose faith regarding a fix for this issue, but my 'faith' is quite dented at the moment.

Please share your experiences here and inform AppleCare via phone directly as well, so they receive as much feedback as possible. That's most important. As much direct feedback as possible. Not only this thread, but real conversations with AppleCare people where they can and will log and register all the various users with this same problem.

When I know more, I will post it again here.

Take care for now.

Sep 19, 2017 1:34 PM in response to mr.aam

Unlike yourself I was not hopeful that ios 11 would fix the problem because I have already been on the GM release for a week now. The problem is the same although, there are quite a few very cool new features in ios 11. I'm really enjoying it. I just wish that the iphone 7 plus was a reliable phone too, but it is not. I'll reach out to my AC guy today...........
