iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

All I posted was that a most recent "version" of their iphone software I was trying out was ineffective against the audio issue we are having issue with. I guess it was the "B" word. I have a copy of the email they sent me too if there is a way I can forward it to you also. The email is in my posession now along with cached pages that were affected. Apparently when you are talking about beta software it is to be done "only" in that forum.

Furthermore, I find it most helpful to others coming in and reading about peoples findings. Direct help from me in that forum would have to be billed at at least $2500 an hour. That is what I charge anyway, for a company of this stature.

Wow again then, I would not have expected that.

Perhaps you can quote and post the key message of that email here, why Apple found it necessary to apply censoring as you say.

I think when I remember that post of yours it was about that you said that the beta made your phone lagging (not fluent) or such and that the mic-cutting-out issue was still there. In a later post you said that this lagging (not fluent) issue was ok again and that the beta felt perfectly smooth as well. But according to you had not yet a fix for the mic-cutting-out issue. I think I replied to that, that I prefer to wait till the final iOS11, before jumping to conclusions as I am not a user of betas and it's a beta for a reason (not officially final). And I have thanked you for your effort to already have tried it with a beta and share your findings here.

Quite a normal thread of posts I think indeed. Would be at least be 'worrysome' if such a thread has censoring at any point. Maybe someone f.ck.d up something?

😳

I agree talking to a real person is often a good way and perhaps best way to of resolving individual issues, however

when major problems arise these are not resolved by one to one chats' I worked for many years to competitor of apple "Moto" one of the original inventors of mobile phones and complaints regarding products and the repose was based on a percentage bases any think under 3% was based on customer or individual faults, that was before the days of social media so manufactures now have to respond to media as it may effect sales and company image ,Samsung for example , like most people on here I have had iPhones for years plus associated products,Since the problem with sound cutting and distortion iv spoked to lots of friends who have iPhones and they say funny you should say that people say that I sound garbled,I see lots of people talking into the end of the phone perhaps they have the same problem, we should bear in mind that these phones cost a great deal of money around £650 here in the UK and we all have the right to complain ,I usually upgrade to a new iPhone as soon as there available but when I 8 is available will leave for a few month to see if faults are fixed and feed back on media.sales of hand sets have fallen dramatically here in the uk as as people are keeping there existing phones

Hi ttttttaaas,

Thanks for your post.

Today I happened to be talking to my senior AppleCare guy, and he was surprised about a possible censorship.

When I read the mail you received, it feels that an over enthusiastic moderator or bot, made a bad judgement about your previous post. When you look positively to it, it can be interpreted as an effort of being helpful, because they don't say anywhere you're not allowed to talk about it, they 'just' recommend you to share your info somewhere else - with the developers - instead of this thread.

Still removing a message is a 'helpful' bridge too far. My AppleCare guy also said that Apple has no intent to silence anyone. But perhaps someone or something made a too quick action which can be easily interpreted as censorship.

Based on the message from Apple it does not feel they wanted to censor you. At least to my belief. But I must say, removing your message is a bit over active 'service' from their end. I must agree.

19th of September we will see the roll out of the final iOS11. I still have my hopes up. Today the AppleCare guy that I am in contact with, confirmed that he had heard from various users that they had good experiences with the iOS 11 beta .9. He was sorry to hear you experienced differently. But still let's await the final version first, and then see if it's really solved yes or no.

Thank you for that and I completely understand the viewpoint. With in sharing my experience with others here it was only my intention to enhance our collective experience in all possible ways. I would like to aid in the solving of this problem in any way apple sees fit. I prefer American products whenever possible. After all, was it not apple that spearheaded most of these technologies we have and enjoy today? But in doing so, when mistakes are made, shine the light on them and fix them so we can again, move on and enjoy our experience. I wish I knew more about the details on this problem now as I've invested a considerable amount of time thinking about it. To be sure, on 09/10/2017 I have confirmed that the issue still exists under the latest version of the currently available ios. I would like to make myself available to assist in the remediation of this problem, free of charge, at any time apple or its affiliates so choose...

To summarize the problem again for those just tuning in:

Generally, an audio problem has shown itself by complaints that the person listening to a call by a person using probably any iphone 7 plus, has a garbled and/or distant voice, when holding the iphone in a normal comfortable way on the face. It does not matter whether or not the call, from the iphone is being made to another cell phone or landline. And it does not matter who initiated the call. The problem appears linked to possibly to the output quality of the iphone 7 pluses microphone only while using the handset to the face.

While I'm sure there could be variations to the above description, they all have the same thing in common, substandard microphone output when on a phone call. Here are some temporary remedies. Putting the iphone into speakerphone mode, using the wired headset or bluetooth earpiece and finally, uncomfortably pressing the phone against your face.

Feel free to add any corrections or additions.

Wow, you can pave the way for all of us being that close to the heat :)

I am informed there is an Apple store in that 'spaceship', like an experience centre or such. Cute to visit one day.

When you would be in The Netherlands I would have been happy to link you with my Dutch senior AppleCare guy when possible. He's a total pro regarding their iPhones and iPads.

But being that close to Apple HQ you must have even more options to make yourself 'heard'.

Maybe take a deep breath and reach out to AppleCare by phone, explain all the steps you went through, explain that the problem is known by Apple (my previous iPhone 7 with a lot of supporting data is being/has been researched at Cupertino regarding this matter) and that iOS 11 would/should fix it, but you have tried and for your iPhone it's not the case, and that you want to have it fixed, and that you are willing to help where possible if they require info or want to do tests with the phone. Apple can do already very advanced stuff from a distance with your phone. When at a certain moment a senior AppleCare guy is connected with you, from that moment on you will only deal with him or her, and you will get his or her email address and you will be in touch with that person all the time, as it should (not everytime someone new to explain to).

Hope you can and will reach out to AppleCare by phone. Have a little patience at first with them because they may go through all te obvious steps first, and when they understand that you are an advanced user and the problem is indeed something deeper, I am quite sure you will get a senior AppleCare person specialized in iPhones and iPads appointed to you to work together on (y)our problem. Apple has to look at all the problems individually as so far known the problem with this problem is that not all iPhones 7 and 7 plus experience this problem.

Thank you ttttttaaas, I think you would be perfect to contribute in this matter as you are that close to Apple HQ and you seem to be an experienced user.

Sep 15, 2017 7:35 AM in response to Inquirer for info

FYI, same problem iPhone7,128,10.3.3,noise cancel off, Data ONLY for LTE, Verizon.

Had it 6 months and already exchanged at apple a couple months ago and same issue. It is ridiculous that an $850 phone cannot make a simple call. Now, thinking it was just me, my daughter got a new 7 (6 suddenly broke) and her first call to me had this same issue. Her voice was going in and out to the point of only understanding about 1/2 the words. She is 250 miles away so it really be a cell tower or service issue. Seems already about 3000 people on this post alone said they have the same problem yet nothing is being stated by apple... Apple please help.

Sep 15, 2017 3:05 PM in response to mr.aam

Second time in a month this has occurred. First time it seemed to work itself out. Today calls cut out mid call. Voice memo works fine, Siri works fine. Tried FaceTime and didn't work, regular call got wind tunnel or extreme background noise, slightly better on speakerphone but had to shout in order for other person to hear. Called apple support they said go to Verizon.

Hi ttttttaaas,

As explained times before, don't go to the Genius bar. They are most ideal for easy solvable generic stuff. Basically they solve problems caused by users. As such that will be their starting point when they meet up with you. So that will work quite frustrating and not ideal for the problem solving process of this mic-cutting-out issue.

Contact AppleCare by phone and ask for / 'demand' a senior AppleCare specialist, specialized in iPhones to be appointed to you.

When you go to the Genius bar I am sure you may even get more frustrated as those guys are too generic for this very 'special' problem and have a starting point of problems caused by users, not something intrinsically inferior with the product.

I will wait though for the official release of iOS11. That's on the 19th, 3 more nights.

Success in your efforts.

Sep 15, 2017 3:57 PM in response to mr.aam

I'm already on the final ios 11. They've been sending it out already for some who press check for update. I was able to get it on my iphone 7 plus but not my ipad air 2. And for the guy who reported my email address, thanks for NOTHING, That is an extra email address I use for things like this. So thank you for slowing us down even more....

Sep 15, 2017 4:05 PM in response to ttttttaaas

Contact AppleCare, get a senior guy specialized in iPhones.

Explain that you have iOS11 final already running on your device and it has no fix to the mic cutting out problem.

Don't waste your time and energy here. Try to keep it efficient. Because you're going in circles now.

When you like to go to the Genius bar on monday, feel free. But keep in mind what I wrote about the Genius bar already versus AppleCare's senior specialists that are only available via phone (and email, when appointed to you).

Relax ttttttaaas. Please canalize your energy in a direction that can deliver results. Take care.
