iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

Unfortunately that tape-trick is not a solution for me (iPhone 7 plus) . Counting down now to order the X, though it will hold no guarantees so far. Noone can currently confirm it has not this problem. Quite an expensive ‘gamble’ then. Crazy to even need to consider it could be a bigger and more frustrating step back ... instead of mind blowing cool progress to look forward to.

The tape has not solved my issue I’ve tried and I have tried every recommendation in this thread to try to solve this, but my mic still cuts out. People can only hear bits of what I’m saying and I sound muffled. But it does not happen all the time just randomly. Apple gave me a replacement phone and the second phone is as bad. Customer service suggest it may be when uploading the back up from iTunes. They said I should put my phone back to factory settings and then use the phone for a few days without the back up. I guess that’s the next step for me. Frankly I’m tired of the whole thing now, wish Apple could help or at least recognise the issue do we know they are looking for a solution.

Am on my 3rd iPhone 7 Plus and 2nd Sim this month and followed all recommendations, still have all the same call quality issues. Tape on back does not help. Going back to Apple again.

Very frustrating to pay $1000 for a new phone that cannot even function as a phone! ATT is of no help, online or in stores, even as a longtime loyal customer. Chat Agents state they will refund me and give a courtesy credit. ATT stores will not do it. I have all my chat transcripts.

Only option is to keep replacing with Apple. And switch carriers soon. Then when AppleCare runs out choose another vendor.

Also appears to be same issues with the iPhone 8...

Hi Amandagreeneyes, save yourself the time and frustration because it has nothing to do with previous backups and clean installs and all that.

It’s very annoying to read time and time again that this issue is not properly recognized by Apple world wide. In the beginning (like a year ago) I was hopeful and did not want to go seek publicity in mainstream media, but now it’s becoming a strategy to consider. They are calling it upon theirselves, not listening to end users feedback and go to market with an equally bad functioning iPhone 8.

The Apple shine is fading quite some. And friends with Samsung S8 Plus are starting to convince me more and more. Samsung has been the phone with better quality photos already for long time, now they seem to make better phones in general as well.

To be continued ... or not ...

Don't blame your carrier. I'm with Verizon and have the microphone issues too. It's not the carrier, it's Apple's problem. Beyond 3 months, why should the carrier cover this problem. Apple made these defective phones, not the carriers. The carriers just provide the service to allow these phones to work. However, I do think that the big carriers should force Apple to buy back these defective phones or replace them with new phones rather than refurbished phones (that obviously have the same problem), or a different generation phone altogether. APPLE ARE YOU LISTENING?

Obviously, because I'm here, I've experienced the same issue. It became apparent soon after I bought the device. Instead of letting my carrier (Verizon) send me a refurbished phone, I went straight to Apple and had them send me a new one since it was within the 1 year warranty period. The new one functioned well for a few days before starting again to cut out when using the phone feature. After several more months, I actually took it to the Apple store in Spokane, WA where they AGAIN replaced my phone. On the 3rd brand new phone and having the exact same issue. I've tried all the standard fixes mentioned here. All the restore options, turning off the HD calling (LTE), restoring network settings, yada.. Today, my girlfriend called from the road and said it was so bad she just said lets talk later. I'm inclined to go to Verizon and just buy a new phone. However, I'm hearing rumors that the new iPhone 8s are doing the same thing. Have even thought of going backwards to a 6. I really wish they would figure this out.

Iphone 7 plus, 128gb, in black. 3rd phone, same issue going on 9 months now.

I agree, my new iPhone 7 plus sounds like it has the same issue, people often say my voice is muffled. If I ask them to hold for a while till I remove phone from case, when I talk again, they say it sounds as though I am standing next to them. My first 7 plus only lasted 2 weeks then died totally, (power to phone from battery stopped). New phone is now 2 weeks old as well, but has had the same issue from day one. I have the Tech21 EvoWallet as well, so am thinking I might try a case with no flap and also no rubber around the microphones at bottom, hopefully it is one of them. Am thinking about what you said regarding flap covering microphone when you open phone, so will experiment with the 2 microphone issues and write some more if I have any luck.

Just to add to my original post. We have acquired an iPhone X and the problem is the same! Again, if we cover the mic as described above the problem is resolved. I'm sure Apple will be aware of this, so either don't see this as a problem, or have chosen to ignore it.

Part of me thinks Steve would not have allowed this to happen!

I was at the Spokane Apple store today for the same problem on my second 7. The first I got my carrier to replace after much wrangling with them. The Spokane Apple store behave as though they have never heard of this problem, but I don’t believe that. You have obviously been to the same store with this problem, as I bet several others have been. They told me there was nothing wrong with my phone and it is an environment problem or a carrier problem. Really? According to this thread, ALL carriers must be ****? What I found is covering the back speaker between my camera and flash cures the problem. Gonna be a pain in the *** to have to cover it for the next two years. I’m pretty ****** and don’t know what to do from here.

Hi Feedat,

Better reach out to Apple Care by phone. My experiences in the store / Genius bar have been the same as yours (which is quite frustrating by their total lack of knowledge about this).

Apple Care by phone seems more knowledgable, especially a senior Apple Care person specialized in the iPhone and iPad series.

It’s better to have an official problem case-file opened for you at Apple. Though mine is existing now roughly for 12 months regarding this problem. So it still holds no guarantees for a quick or good fix of this problem. But at least your’re officially in ‘the Apple Care system’ as one of many users with this same problem.

Success!
