iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

So I must say ATT came through for me... Replaced my 3rd iPhone 7+ with an iPhone 8+, still had the same call quality issues. They assisted me in reactivating my old iPhone 6+ (so happy I still had it) and refunded me for the 8+. I LOVE my old iPhone 6+, as it actually works as telephone. Not so much the 3x iPhone 7+ and 1x iPhone 8+ Apples...

Thank you ATT! 🙂

I had the same problem since few months now, changed the service provider still the microphone problem continued, contacted apple service center in UAE, got the 7+ 128gb replaced with a brand new 7+128gb, updated the software to latest iOS 11.2.1 the problem still continues:(. Now booked an appointment with service center again... don’t know what they would do to resolve this issue....

Further to my visit to apple service center 4 times no solution they could find to resolve the microphone inconsistency problem. As per their test parameters everything is working properly, but when I make calls after few minutes of communication voice goes down and some time almost nil voice for the receiving end. I was really surprised to see the way Apple store at Yas Mall Abu Dhabi dealt with me, they didn't even bother to study the issue even though I have spend hours and hours visiting service center and bring this issue up four times even after receiving a replacement unit. It seems Apple has achieved enough and more customers now and customers who brings up the complaints are only a nuisance for them not an opportunity to become better.

Ok, so 3x iPhone 7 plus and 1x iPhone 8 plus, all same problem with horrible call quality, doing all the recommended steps. Clearly, Apple is clearly a LOW QUALITY product now.... Support does not care. I thank God, my provider, AT&T took care of me and credited back for the phone and I am using my OLD iPhone 6 Plus that still has excellent call quality! Good Luck and my next phone WILL NOT BE AN APPLE! Run, don't walk...

SAME EXACT PROBLEM but I'm on Verizon however- My phone is bad, my wife's identical phone is 100% perfect. Its a garbled windy static to them, sometimes no voice audio at all.. and to me, when they talk, it sounds so distant its like I'm trying to rescue someone out of an abandoned mine shaft.

iPhone 7 128gb 10.0.2. Apple chat tech support said to stop by an apple store and have them look at it :\

I have the exact problem with my iphone7 verizon the only way people can hear me is by almost sticking the bottom of the phone in my mouth, if its more than 2 inches away its garbled and sound drops to nothing. I have tried a replacement 7 and its still there, i had to turn my old 6 back on and with that phone people can hear me as far as i can hold the phone away with my arm

I have the iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, 256GB, jet black) and just started having a problem with the microphone after nearly two weeks of flawless use. I first noticed it yesterday during a video recording of a concert. When I played back my videos, the audio was very muffled and barely audible. Checked to make sure it wasn't the speakers, but sure enough if was muffled in the recording itself (wasn't distorted, just very very muffled). Then when I got home from the concert, I did some tests just by recording my voice and some music in my living room. Sure enough, the audio is cutting out during video recording (if you turn the volume all the way up on playback, there is still some recording going on, but it is barely audible), but then it comes back. I can repeat this with just about every video recording, and loud sounds seem to trigger it more (but it's even done it just recording my voice with nothing else).

At this point I don't know if it's a software glitch or a hardware issue with the mic. I am going to restore the phone to see if that fixes it. Seems like it fixed it for you for a few days, which seemed to indicate a software issue. But if it came back, what does that mean? Have you had any problems with the replacement or are you still waiting for it?

Also, are you running the iOS 10.1 beta, or on the regular release?

This sounds like a different issue than ours. But to answre your questions, we tried the software restore, thinking that it would fix the problem, but it didn't. We were using iOS 10.0.2. It really seems like a hardware issue, but we obviously cannot be certain of that. We cannot have a no functioning phone, that is, we can't have these microphone/communication dropouts during calls, so we are sending it back for a replacement.

EExact same problem if i pull the phone away from my face even a little it gets crazy and people cant hear me or sounds very very distant and cuts out like crazy I found if u cover the rear mic with your finger by the camera it gets way better also I turned off noise cancelation in settings general accessibility still happens it is something with the rear mic

also so noticed if you are taking videos or pictures and go from something dark to smtg bright the camera goes completely black try it focus on smtg in a dark area then immediately go up to a light it will go black this is for the plus models only I think I have matte black 256 gb att had one replacement already and I guess I need another one same crap etc apple
