iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

Hello,

I do have the exact same problem with my iPhone 7 (iOS 10.0.3, Germany, Telekom) . I have contacted Apple support two weeks ago and they suggested a factory reset and a restore from my backup. But it did not ⚠ resolve the problem. Updating to the new version of iOS even did not resolve the problem. So I will contact Apple support again to get my iPhone fixed.... I hope they can fix it. I never had these kind of problems with any of my previous iPhones (iPhone 6).

Anyone have any luck with his issue.

I have the same issue with my iPhone 7 Plus 128GB. I am using it with the Dutch KPN provider.

I can reproduce the issue. I have always used my iphone's (3GS, 4GS, 5S, 6) with folio or wallet cases. This means that when I have to make a phone call dependent on the design of the case the front flap would be on the rear side of the iphone. This had never been a problem for my old iphone's.

The odd thing is that when I am making a phone call with my iPhone 7 Plus in the KAVAJ Dallas case and the flap is behind the rear part of the iPhone 7 plus, the microphone is cutting out and also I sound very muffled to the other party. As soon as I take the iPhone 7 Plus out of the case, the sound quality is much better. I even bought another case (Tech21 Evo Wallet) and the problem was still there. As if the rear microphone is causing a problem. As said before, I have never had this issue before. Not sure whether you are experiencing the problem with or without a case.

I could reproduce the issue with IOS 10.0.2 and 10.0.3, Noice cancellation on/off, a clean restore without using a backup.

I have returned the iPhone 7 plus and asked for a refund. Until they solve this issue I will hold on to my iPhone 6.

By the way there is another thread about this issue iPhone 7 Plus Phone Call Sound Quality

I have an iphone 7 plus, 256G and everyone keeps telling me that I fade out and they cannot hear me for a few seconds. Initially I thought I was moving around and cell signal was the issue. But I purposely stay in one spot with 3 bars and they still tell me that I fade in and out. It appears to be random. I am leaning towards the phone as the issue?

Same problem here, been busy with it for weeks now. iPhone 7 black 256 GB on Vodafone network (NL)

I experienced from the beginning microphone cutting out during calls and/or at times people could hardly hear me like I was under water or standing in a different room. With a little movement away from the mouth and speaker still to my ear, the microphone randomly cuts out and/or drops. My clients have told me quite some times that they could not hear me temporarily or for longer or very badly. Very troublesome and annoying actually. I am using roughly every new iPhone model since the 3G model. Never had this problem with any of them.

1) 1st I waited for updates as Apple announced shortly after some software improvements/updates for iPhone 7 / 7 Plus (no stress yet, it's Apple! they will for sure fix it 😉)

2) After all updates and resets and new install efforts & resets (really absolutely anyting that is recommended for problem solving) -> mic cutting out randomly and/or dropping during calls remained

3) Called Vodafone service and they answered me that at times during the call they had difficulty hearing me ... exactly!

4) Vodafone picked it up under warranty and checked it, returned without improvements -> mic cutting out randomly and/or dropping during calls remained

5) Vodafone store renewed SIM card -> mic cutting out randomly and/or dropping during calls remained

6) Called Apple support and they answered me as well that at times during the call they had difficulty hearing me ... again exactly the problem! They advised to make an appointment with the Genius Bar.

7) The Genius Bar of Apple Store in Amsterdam renewed the iPhone 7 -> but unfortunately with the new phone still the mic is cutting out randomly and/or dropping during calls

8) Again at Apple Store in Amsterdam last weekend I was advised to do a DFU installation -> mic cutting out randomly and/or dropping during calls remained ... AND I had to re-install a lot as I was advised not to do a back-up from my iCloud backup. In hindsight I am not sure if that could be the problem at all, but when all other fails ...

I still have no solution. And still an iPhone 7 that is doing a bad job at phone calls. Burned a lot of time and energy on this matter. I have again booked an Apple Support call at 16.00h today.

Loosing a little bit my trust in Apple. Though wish not. I am actually a big and longtime happy Apple user.

Hi, thank you for asking about the outcome of the phone call today.

During the phone call with Apple Support I was put redirected to a senior specialist of Apple. We are now connected directly by email as well, totally VIP 🙂.

Additionally I had to provide more information on when and how the problem happens and I did do all that. And I answered some extra questions by email for the Apple engineers. It will now move up to Apple engineering level.

Also the senior specialist of Apple confirmed to me that he heard the problem with my iPhone very well on his end.

Now the engineering team of Apple will crunch their smart brains over it. Very confident that they will fix it over time. Hopefully very soon.

Interesting though is that while testing various situations like FaceTime Audio over Wifi (the mic problem still occurs when holding the phone to your ear and use the phone the same way as when calling cellular as described previously) there was a test as well to record some voice memos with the iPhone 7. When I did that while using it like I was calling someone with the slight movements that makes the mic cut and drop when calling cellular or calling with FT-over-Wifi, the recording of the voice memo was constantly perfect and had no mic cuts or drops ⚠.

Perhaps an explanation could be that the device when it records a voice memo is not using sensors that are triggered by movement or positioning to ear & mouth. And maybe in that lies the problem and solution. But I am not a specialist ... only a little bit by unwanted experience now 😉.

I think to better give the Apple engineers some time to look at this and come up with a solution as it is most obviously becoming a more and more wider problem among iPhone 7 users.

The voice memo recording test gave me hope that it can be solved by a software update. As the recording was great at all times. So technically there is no reason why the mic could not work properly for phone calls and such as well. Probably just needs an update fix of some bug or such.

Thanks again for asking for the update of the phone call. When you find out anything more, let me know. I will do the same here. Have a nice day.
