iPhone 7 Microphone Cutting Out

I have a new iPhone 7 Plus 128gb running iOS 10.0.2. During phone calls, both speakerphone and handheld, callers tell me that while I'm talking, my voice will cut out and they hear garbled static (btw, this happened before updating to 10.0.2 as well). It is like wind noise in sound. Sometimes it works without issue, and other times it doesn't. After a call is ended, I can call back and the caller says that they can barely hear me, but the static is not there anymore.

I am in the process of restoring the phone to factory settings to see if that will fix the problem. But it really sounds like a hardware problem. Does anyone know of this problem being similar to yours Or one that you've heard of?

would you think that this is a hardware problem rather than software problem?

If it is a hardware problem, should I work with AT&T where I got the phone or should I try I do a warranty replacement through Apple?

I know we all have our theories. Based on what everyone has said my theory is that it's a hardware issue affecting many iphones. It *could* be fixable by software, but maybe not too.

What I don't understand is how this seems to not be more widely known about by Apple or acknowledged. Especially since so many of us (including me) have gotten new iphones with the same issue - that would statically indicate a huge number of people experiencing their voice cutting out to the other caller.

How do we get someone from Apple directly involved in this discussion?

If you look back in this thread Apple support is aware of this issue. Problem like this could take some time, plus if it is a hardware issue don't expect Apple to admit to it anytime soon.

Hang in there I guess. My daughter left a voicemail the other day that was terrible hardly understandable, we both set some settings per suggestion from this post, still working on isolating it.

Apple is aware otherwise I don't believe it they would have easily replaced my phone so quickly and easily not only once but twice within a month of each other. I would suggest either calling them and have them send you a replacement or make an appt with the Genius Bar and they'll replace it right then and there. I told them that I'll continue to keep requesting a replacement until I quit getting complaints from people on the other end of my calls. It's frustrating but that's the only way I can think of that may possibly get their attention to this problem.

I haven't replaced mine yet mainly due to all the complaints that it's not helping. I'm hoping a software fix might be in the mix, but I'm looking at these messsages on a daily bases. From the settings I have, no complaints yet. I have Noice Cancelation turned off and no WiFi calling, plus not WiFi Assist and under Cellular there is a setting under Cellular Data options for LTE I have only Data selected. I had my daughters iPhone 7 Plus set the same, but received a very garbled voicemail from her, so I'm still not sure if these settings help, I haven't had issues yet.

Turning off the noice cancellation may fix my issues! The noise cancellation mic is on the back of the phone near the camera and from what I was told at the Genius Bar rep is that - that is something new with the 7 plus so I am going to try that and see if it helps solve my issues. Also, I used to have one of those wallet/iPhone cases which when I would be on my phone, the flap would cover that mic located on the back so I had to buy a new case which so far HAS reduced the amount of complaints but not all.

Anyhow, thanks again for the mic suggestion!

I have tried turning off noise cancelling optimistic given the issue, however that did not fix the problem. It almost seems to me like that is in fact the problem but the setting in iOS does not actually work. The only thing that has worked for me is when the phone is laying on the counter with no movement.....which is sub-optimal to say the least.

I like the plan about continually returning iPhones till you get a working one. Perhaps I will try that. I briefly has someone else's iPhone 7 plus (black) and did not experience the issue, but alas the two ones I've had do have it!

You do not have to do that, you just have to reset the settings, you can do it in general-reset-reset all settings, YOU DO NOT NEED TO BACKUP AND RESTORE YOUR PHONE. Its just annoying that all your settings will be reset every time you do it. Which backup and restore method would do as well and takes a whole lot longer to do so, maybe sometimes as much as 10x or higher if you are using the larger capacity phone.

I went to turn off the noice cancellation and it was already turned off so that didn't solve my problem. I actually turned it on to see what it would do and it was TERRIBLE!

My friend who has had her 7 plus for about a month or so had no issues until just recently. She was one of the complainers of not being able to hear me and she sent me a msg the other day saying that she has now had several people complain about not being able to hear her. So maybe it's a malfunction that doesn't start till a few weeks into having the phone? IDK. She's going to do what I did and request that apple gives her a new one and if she has problems with that one, she'll continue to request a new one!

It's absurd! I heard they are already about to release and 8 yet they can't even get the 7plus to work correctly. If I have these issues when they release that one I'm going to demand they take this 7 plus back and give me an 8 for free.

I too having the same exact issue with my iPhone 7 128 . If I take my phone an inches away and speak in the call , the other person feels like I am talking few meters away from phone. I did some research and observed below points. 1) if I stick the phone very close to my mouth it is fine. 2 ) if I take an inch away not audible but if I put in loud speaker and talk from inches away it is audible . 4 ) while recording the video in the camera it is ok 5) while recording the audio by voice memo application you have to use seperate mic and loud speaker and stick the iPhone on the speaker to record with good volume. It is crazy some one please help us understand what is wrong and how to fix this issue.

My wife is also experiencing the same issues. I am looking forward to hearing what you find out from Apple.

We have found a temporary solution for us. I used our google account and created a phone number and downloaded Google Hangouts and Voice. I then went into Verizon and forwarded my wife's phone number to the google number.

This is allowing her to make and receive calls. It also imports her contacts allows voicemail so she isn't missing any calls. So far she isn't having the same issues as she was when using the default Phone app.

Hopefully this may help some people for a temporary fix until Apple finds a solution.

Hello,

Some days have past since my last post on this topic, so let me kindly update you again.

The additional demonstration-movie by me of the exact problem and with captured sound this time from the user end and my Apple care senior advisor on the receiver end to confirm the problem, and then to be used by Apple engineering for further research has been made last saturday and sent to Apple engineering (all via a secure Apple transfer-link ... fancy! 🙂).

The Apple care senior advisor that is linked with me is really a great and professional guy. Based on his input and the requirements & instructions he received from Apple engineering, we made a great and useful film-document for them to research the issue further and in depth. Happy about that. It's all progress! 🙂

Apple engineering is researching the matter further and I will hear back from my Apple care advisor on thursday.

Apple is quite aware - as he confirmed - that there is a real problem. Engineering had difficulties re-creating the problem and they wanted me to show on film how the problem is to be triggered, with sound so they could check also for interference or my tone of voice or anything imaginable. I did, and now it's their move again.

Also, I have upgraded before all this my iOS to 10.2.1. I hoped a little bit that this might already fix it, but no. Not yet. The problem is still current.

Basically, it can be assumed there is something faulty regarding the iPhone7 motion-sensor in combination with software and other functionalities of the iPhone. There's something 'buggy' there in that mix.

I truly think - I hope - Apple engineering is about to see 'the light' any day soon. I am expecting Apple's confirmation to understand the issue, and this journey of frustration may then come to an end with a final and definitive solution to it all.

It may result in a simple software-update-fix or when not fixable by software, it could even result in an iPhone exchange-programme when it's a hardware issue. But let's wait and see what they can work out as the best solution for their users.

Nevertheless I still feel that they are a pretty amazing technology group ... when I hear more, I'll let you know again.

Cheers! 🙂

Hi mr.aam,

Good to hear.

You would think if it were a hardware or a software issue everyone would be having the problem. It is just so weird that it randomly affects people. Remember, we have all exchanged the phone many times. The odds are astronomical that I or anyone else would end up time and again with a bad phone. When they find out what the problem is I will be real curious to know what has caused this problem.

Jan 30, 2017 2:57 PM in response to BlueEyedBull

Hi Jan 30,

Thank you for your message.

When it's the motion-sensor in combination with software and other functionalities, then the 'problem-occurance' is very much determined and triggered by the user him/herself (for example his or her physical calling behaviour).

For myself for example, I have kinda 'trained' myself now not to move my iPhone7 during phone calls at all, and actually by that the problem is 'solved'. Obviously not really solved because as soon as I do some of the problem-triggering-moves, the problem is immediately there again.

I think the reason why it seems that not everybody is experiencing the problem as such or as much, has a lot to do by independent and different use by users. That seems the best and most logic explanation.

And when the connection seems bad and you call again, but by calling again you reposition your phone and the line is then fine again, you may just think it was a carrier problem. And not think anything more to it.

So actually the issue is very tricky in a way. That's why it takes quite a while to converge to the problem-determination by Apple engineering, and then accordingly to the real-problem-solving of it. But we are getting there!

When I know more, I am happy to share it here again.

All the best!
