GPS issue running Nike Run Club with Apple watch series 2

I have my Apple Watch 2 setup with the Nike Run Club app. On numerous occasions I have tried to run without my iPhone (6 running 10.0.2) and for some reason the GPS does not appear to be working. While I can log runs, the pace/time is completely off and it's not capturing GPS data as the maps don't appear in the app once I log and submit the run. Also, I would assume the GPS isn't working since the pace is so far off. It seems to me it's logging the runs using the accelerometer which hasn't yet been calibrated as I want to be able to log the runs using GPS. I need help. Has anyone else had the same using while trying to use this app? I bought the watch to replace an old Nike+ band, in the hopes I could run without the phone, but it's been an uphill battle making it work. Has the Nike Run Club app not yet been updated to fully utilize GPS data from the Apple Watch?

Hi All,

For those who were still struggling with the AW2 out of the box, it was the same for me. The AW2 NRC+ did not work. The native running app worked. Map My Run worked. But no so sexy interface.

Here's what I did.

1. I uninstalled the NRC+ app from My Watch. Just OFF the radio button it will uninstall.

2. I uninstalled the NRC+ app on my iPhone 6S.

3. Rebooted both devices.

4. Re-installed NRC+ on iPhone first. Then re-installed NRC+ on the AW2.

5. It will prompt to ask for permission to allow the AW2 to access NRC+ and Health Data. Note: MUST Allow all.

6. Stood by the window/outdoor with AW2 only. Little red "no phone" icon appears. Started the NRC+ app. 3,2,1 then wait about 30 seconds. HR bpm started showing up. Moved a bit, Pace started showing up, then distance read 0.01km.

Took it for evening run. Clocked 8.45km. Back home, once you start the NRC+ on iPhone, it will take up to 3-4 minutes to sync the latest data with the AW2. The data showed up with the map. So it worked. But I do think the main problem is the GPS signal acquisition before you start running. If you don't stay still for 1-2 mins until the GPS signal is locked, and start running, then the watch will take much longer to get a steady GPS signal. So how do you know? there is no GPS Satellite indicator. Go outdoors, clear skies is best or between buildings, nothing overhead. Start NRC+, wait 1-2mins, start walking around, once you will see that Pace --'--" change to some numbers 21'31" (for eg.) you are good to go.

But having to go through all that trouble? for $400? ... I am selling it. Sticking to my Garmins.

Good Luck Guys! Happy Running.

Thanks for these tips, I'll try it out next run.

I also have the Nike branded AW2, and have been pretty disappointed with its gps performance. I ran a marathon a few weeks ago with just the watch and no phone, and by the 9km marker the Nike + running app was nearly 1km off in the distance reading ! After that it climbed a little more , and was 1.2km off by the end of the race. The track recorded by the app had missed a few km completely, and just drew a straight line from km 2 to 6. The run went through a tunnel for about 400m around 2km mark, so I assume the big problem with the app or watch gps is how to recover from temporary loss of gps signal.

I tried to communicate with the Nike+ support on twitter but they didn't really understand the problem.

The latest update to the NRC app has brought new problems. Now when you raise the wrist to glance at the distance during a run , the display is way out of date. This was a major problem with their AW1 app, and seemed to have been fixed on the AW2, but this morning it took many seconds to properly update the display. That is so fundamental for a running app, how could they possibly get it so wrong ?

I also have the voice messages enabled for giving me verbal update every km. In the latest app update, even that is broken. This morning I got a 7km voice announcement after 7.6km, and an 8km voice announcement at 8.26km for instance. It worked fine in previously sessions of the app.

Very frustrating indeed

I don't use the Nike app, but I have noticed similar behaviour in the Workouts app. When I go for a run the GPS usually fails to acquire a signal until I have completed about 3km. It usually still gives an accurate distance reading, however on rare occasions it goes berserk after briefly having been in a tunnel or other signal inhibiting location.

Based on your experience it sounds like I should have a go at standing still outside for a couple of minutes before commencing my run in order to give the GPS an opportunity to lock although, as you say, this is awkward due to the lack of any indication of the GPS status. Do I need to have the Workout app open and/or an activity started in order for the GPS to lock?
