Apple update ios 10.0.2 battery drain fast.

Hello anyone here on 10.0.2... I think I may know a fix - It's just a suspicion as I reverted to 10.0.1 and am not keen to go back to 10.0.2 to try this potential fix but if others on 10.0.2 could please try the following and report results:

1. Connect iPhone to computer using USB cable.

2. Open iTunes and click on the Device icon (towards the top left of iTunes screen).

3. At the top-left of the screen should be a little photo of your iPhone and next to it the name of your iPhone. Please click on the text and type to rename it to a name you have never used before (press enter when finished typing).

4. On your iPhone, go into Settings->Privacy->Location Services->Share My Location->Click "From" and ensure the name of the device that you just renamed is selected (and it must say "This Device" underneath it). If it is not selected, click it to select so that it is ticked.

Important note: If you see any old device names (in Share My Location->From) that you know you are no longer using, swipe to the left (on that device's name) and click delete.

My suspicion is that for some reason after the 10.0.2 update, the device name is not matching up what is in Apple's cloud (or an old device name is in use) and this is causing Location Services to constantly phone home and fail to connect with Apple servers, draining battery...

I am curious to see if these easy-to-do steps help anyone on iOS 10.0.2 resolve the battery drain issue...

It is definitely not app related in my opinion. I am certain of this because I use entirely different applications than what my 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter use. Granted, I have over 150 apps on my devices, ranging from games to network management tools. My daughter on the other hand has none of the same apps as me, yet she suffers from the same problem on her iPhone 5 as I do on my 6s. If it happens to be app related, it would have to be associated with an Apple built in app, since those are the only ones that we all have in common... including my 9 year old.

My growing concern is on how this will impact the lithium ion battery's life expectancy. All rechargeable batteries have a maximum number of full recharges that they can sustain. With my batteries needing to be fully recharged more than once per day, I fear they will reach the end of their usefulness in short order if Apple doesn't identify the problem and release a fix.

I pulled my phone off of the charger this morning at 7:30am and the phone had been turned off over night. It is now 3 hours and 20 minutes later... my battery is at 37% and the phone is warm like it's been sitting in the sun.

I should also mention that my brother and sister-in-law report the same issue ever since they upgraded.

I just tested your theory. No luck. I even powered the phone off afterwards. In the 10 minutes since I tried this, I've lost 5% of my battery with the phone just sitting on my desk doing nothing.

constant Location Services Compass Calibration pinging came back..

to solve above problem..i had tried doing try n error..it's works..

try closed 1. location - based alert

2. location - based apple ads

3. location - based suggestion

all above setting located on system service..

Just came back from the Apple store. Apps did not download, phone very very hot and battery draining fast. I entered the store around 13:00 and at 80% battery. They asked me to erase and start again. After 1 hour i was left with a 1% battery and a phone that was burning hot; my hands were itching from touching it. Apple refused to change phone. All normal according to them. I've used a 3 a 4s a 5 and a 6. Never had a similar issue. iphone 7 big flop. Don't waste your money. Wait for something better tested.

Over the past weekend, I downgraded from 10.0.2 to 10.0.1. For the first 5-6 hours after the downgrade, it appeared that my iPhone 6 was working like it used to under iOS 9. However, once I got to about 80% of battery life remaining, my phone quickly went down to 30% over the course of roughly 45 minutes. The phone was completely dead in another 45 minutes. The phone continues to get abnormally warm, just sitting on my desk. I had 100% charge 90 minutes ago and currently have 68%.

At this point I am thinking about going entirely back to 9.3.5 and calling it a day. What a massive disappointment iOS 10 has become. To put this whole thing into perspective, the majority of my co-workers have iPhones. Those that have "upgraded" to iOS 10 are telling me that they are also noticing that their devices are getting too warm and battery life is horrible. Enough already Apple! Get your act together!

Update to my own post above... my iPhone 6s is dead after 4:11. This is serious BS Apple.

I am also having massive battery drain problems since updating to ios 10.0.2. I have an iPhone 5S. I have tried everything to make the battery last longer (location services off, no GPS, no email, etc). I have tried resetting the phone, uninstalling and reinstalling ios 10.0.2; restoring the data. You name it! All those articles telling you how to improve your battery life? I have tried every single thing.

I have the same apps I had before upgrading. Nothing has changed on my phone. I use it with the same apps (maybe 10 app installed by me), browsing the same web addresses, everything is the same as before.

And my battery is draining like crazy. I am fed up with Apple suggesting we restart out phones or telling us that most likely we installed the wrong app. I barely have any apps installed and they are all up to date.

Apple, get your act together! In the meantime I hope I can still downgrade to ios 9.3.5. Anyone done this lately? (it is October 6, can we still downgrade??)

Hi Everyone,

I managed to get 10.0.2 sorted and working with great battery life (back to how it was as a brand new iPhone 7 when on 10.0.1 with average of 36 hours switched on (6-8 hour usage reported in battery settings).

I am copy-pasting the text reply I recently sent to Apple Bugreporter - In the process of trying to reproduce the bug and logging for Apple I actually fixed the battery drain issue!

Before I copy paste, I will give you all the short summary (Do this at your own risk to data loss) -

Super-short summary

---------------------------

Fixing the battery drain issue on 10.0.1 may be accomplished by:

1. Backup of iPhone/iPad

2. Resetting all settings + Resetting Network Settings

3. Download only of iOS 10.0.2 in iTunes (do not select Download & Update) and then do "Restore iPhone" in iTunes - NOT OTA Update

Short summary - If above doesn't work you may need to introduce downgrade of iOS into the steps...

--------------------

1. Avoid OTA Update.

2. If you have updated to 10.0.2 and experience the issue, downgrade to 10.0.1 using iTunes Restore (see instructions on loading 10.0.1 IPSW and make sure to backup first)...

3. Once on an iOS version below 10.0.2, Reset all settings and (very importantly) Reset Network Settings (in Settings-General-Reset).

4. Using iTunes "Backup" (If at any stage you are prompted to Download & Update iOS, just select "Download only")

5. Using iTunes, connect iPhone/iPad and click the Restore iPhone button - At the end of the process select your backup to restore all your old data and settings.

COPY PASTE OF REPORT:

* iPhone 7, 10.0.1 -> 10.0.2 OTA Update

* 50-70% of previous battery life observed over 48hr period

* Tried a restore from iTunes (10.0.2 -> 10.0.2) - no change in battery drain issue

* iTunes Backup

* Downgraded (Using iTunes restore) to 10.0.1 - battery drain mostly returned to normal but seemed to still be down a little but this is hard to say as my usage does vary...

* Factory reset (settings only) and Network settings reset carried out

After being asked to submit bug report took the following steps:

* iTunes Backup

* Using iTunes upgraded 10.0.1->10.0.2 using the "restore iPhone" method and then selecting my latest backup

* Noticed towards the end of the restore process I was prompted to Install "Carrier Settings Update). This did not happen during the previous OTA Update (or downgrade).

On this point, I do feel this may be a clue to the cause of the battery drain issue (corrupted network settings during update). Another iPhone customer reports the same result:
