If your printer is connected to your Computer/Network and visible, from the >App Store> run the Updates.

If that doesn't do it. go t0 HP website and download from there.

I had the same question, only with a different printer/scanner. Mine is a Canon MG5420, and there is no driver that is compatible with Sierra. I could still print FROM the computer, but I couldn't scan TO the computer. After reading one of the answers to your question, I went into System Preferences and selected Printers and Scanners. That opened a window that gave me a list of printers and scanners connected to my iMac. I selected the scanner, and then clicked on Open Scanner, which opened another window that said "Scanner is warming up"! It connected to the scanner and scanned the picture I had in it! While I have always used the buttons on the scanner to scan to the computer, this is a pretty simple work-around! At first, I thought I was going to have to go through all these steps each time I wanted to scan, but then I right-clicked on the scanner, then options, then selected Keep in Dock. Now, to scan something, I just click on the scanner icon in the dock and it opens and scans! I'm so relieved - thought I was going to have to replace my printer/scanner AGAIN! I already had to replace a perfectly good printer/scanner when I bought my iMac, because there was no driver for it. Hope this helps someone else who has this problem!

Me too. Same problem. I even installed the HP Printer update from Apple. Still won't work.
I open HP Utilities and I select Scan to Computer and I click on "enable scan to computer". I get a "communication error" message, even though it communicates just fine when I want to print. I can even use the HP Scan app to scan documents. But I can no longer load a page into the doc feeder and scan to my computer.
And yes, I've shut down and restarted both my computer and the printer/scanner. That didn't help.

I have an HP Pro 8600. I sure wish I hadn't upgraded to Sierra.

the responsibility of providing working drivers for an OS update is with the developer of that device, not apple. check the developer page for your make/model device and see if they offer drivers, if not contact the developers. Apple sometimes will provide printer drivers but if a device is a legacy printer the developer may choose to retire it from use.

Try Vuescan. It's not free but has a demo so you can check it out first. This has been around for years and is well supported.

I have a HP 8620 and had to set up the scan to computer again.

Following the instr. from the front panel of the printer/scanner:

Open HP Utility>Scan settings>select Scan to computer
