macOS Sierra freeze on iMac late 2009 using Safari

Was on 16C41b.... will update to 16C48b today

I seriously doubt it, as the freezing previously occured both with & without YouTube, with & without iTunes, with & without Bejeweled and now it apparently doesn't even need Safari...

Besides, my iMac has an Intel Iris Pro graphics card. Other macs mentioned sport both nVidia and ATi cards. So a general graphics driver/card issue seems unlikely to me, as all these cards need different drivers.

I actually (iirc) never had a freeze on El Capitan.

Just to confirm, do you have the same symptoms? Mac freezes up but mouse still moves and music (if it is playing) continues?

Yep, until I actually click somewhere or try to CMD+TAB. Then I get the beachball of death. YT plays on though...

Same problem on my mid-2010 iMac 21.5", since Sierra (though I don't know if it started after one of the updates, or since the first Sierra install). I have an OWC SSD that I installed several months ago, but I did not see this problem until after Sierra. No such problem with my 13" mid-2012 Air on the same OS.

In my case, once the machine freezes, if I leave it alone until it sleeps, it will reboot itself and send a report to Apple (I have enabled all diagnostic reporting, hoping there will be enough info to track the problem down).

Exactly the same problem, the only thing that works is the mouse but the only solution is to shut down and restart, same 2009 27" Imac

Any solutions out there?, didn't happen with El Capitan but too wary of trying to get rid of Sierra back to El Capitan

Hopefully a modification will come to resolve the issue

Today Apple marked the *original* bug report on this as closed, as opposed to the duplicate reports some of us submitted. This hopefully means that Apple believes it has resolved the issue. While we can't know when a fix will be released, hopefully this will be with the final version of 10.12.2.

Excellent... Hopefully people will keep us updated in this thread. Since me going back to El Capitan, I haven't experienced any freezes yet. However, it's only been a couple of days, so fingers crossed 😀.

I've not had a freeze issue yet on the latest macOS 10.12.2 (16C48b), Safari seems to crash instead.

I'd rather that Safari crashes than the OS freezes... How often does it happen?

Seldom, it seems to happen when instead it would freeze; this is progress.

I disabled extensions (Ghostery, GoToMeeting) in Safari, then this morning I got another freeze with no Safari windows active (there were some that were minimized however). I was using my scanner and playing Apple Music - the music continued but I needed a reboot.
